It'll be fun watching animal rights types go against the No invasive species types.

Most of the honkies on Maui are unbelievable Karens.   They bitched about the Cane process, then when the factory closed, they bitched about erosion and development risk.

this is precisely why you don't compromise with liberals.

Interesting, I grew up in Hawaii as a kid, I was living on lanai around 1996, went through hunters Ed and my first hunt was a mouflon hunt on the island
We had a decent population of axis and mouflon,
We were definitely not over run at the time

And being no coyotes or wolfs or anything else to chase deer, the only real predator they had was poaching, in the mid 90s on the island poaching was surprisingly common
If a baby cow got out of its fence line I’ve seen Filipino family’s load the damn cow in their truck and take it home and eat it.

I have a feeling the island has changed a lot and is not nearly as lawless as it used to be
Heck even the cockfighting ring was just a short walk from the police station and courthouse at the corner of the park

Living on lanai was like living in a 3rd world country at the time, English was not a common spoken language, and when it was spoken or even taught in school there it was usually in a very heavy pigeon

I don’t miss living there, but it made me appreciate rural living
if you think California is expensive parts of Hawaii would blow your mind, in 1996 gas on lanai was 3.30 a gallon and milk was 7 a gallon
I also don’t miss the methheads
But the article and pics definitely bring back some interesting memories

There are herds in the hundreds of deer on Molokai and Maui.  Many of them are going to die off in expected summer drought.  But they'll still be overpopulated and reproduce out of control.  Problem is hunters are mainly going after bucks, they need to go for the does so they don't reproduce as fast.

Then definitely don't hang out in section 8 housing or for instance, Pearlridge Center (gangs).
Like anyplace in the world, you just have to know which places to avoid.

Pearlridge is nice!  If you want places to stay away from, try KPT or Palolo Valley.

Diamond Head public range? I meant Koko Head, thinking of the horse stables inside of Diamond Head crater.
View Quote

Watching the sun rise from the top of Koko head is pretty amazing. One time I was up there some soldier dude ruined it by proposing to his girl as the sun was coming up.

Seems like there was a rifle range closer to diamond head. (around the corner from Waikiki).

The first time I was on Oahu for work I wanted to buy a pellet gun to hunt chickens in the parks but I didn't want to get in trouble. Lol

An archery hunt/fishing trip would be an awesome vacation.

Hawaii still requiring a vax to enter? Pretty sure I read they were.

In any case, why not just have Obama's security detail go out and shoot them. Lord knows he's got a small army and that is his home.

No.

Indoor mask restriction has also been lifted.

Living there (especially growing up and going to school) and frequenting a bougie area are two different things.

It's not hard to find accounts of racism either. You'll see it less in the touristy areas of course. The brown people will tolerate your dollars, but they don't want you there.

I've lived here for the last 37 years both on Oahu and the Big island.  Most of the people I have lived near, hang out with, work with, and work around are non-haole with a large percentage of them being Native Hawaiian.  In my time here I can count my anti-haole interactions on one hand and have fingers and a thumb leftover.  On the other hand, I've lost count of the number of times locals have been helpful, joyous and welcoming.

Maybe the problem isn't with them.

Axis is delicious. Making jerky out of it would be a waste IMO

When you have excess amounts of a certain game you find new and awesome ways to enjoy it. I've had so much lobster that you try lots of different cooking techniques. Have you ever had tempura fried lobster leg meat?

Good turkey hunting in Hawaii, too.

I can hunt them with a golf club on my property.  I've caught 2 by hand when they tried to run trough my fence instead of flying over it.

Locals don't really hunt or eat them, they are Rio Grandes and tend to be tough and stringy.  I have them eyed as SHTF food for the dogs.

Where ever we stayed in Hawaii I could see another smaller island a little ways across the water. I googled it and it's sparsely populated but you can hunt goats, I think

If it weren't for the politics and generally being expensive to live in, id love to live on the big island.

Axis deer, perfectly sized wild pigs, wild goat (both wild wild and domestic goats turned wild), wild chickens, wild cows, quail, plethora of good eating seafood......

But theres a lot of regulation.
View Quote

No Axis deer on the Big Island (officially)  but plenty pig, goat and birds (quail, Francolin, pheasant, Kalij pheasant)

I was good friends with the head of Dept of Lands and Natural Resources (DLNR) long before he got the job when I was on Oahu.  After getting it, we were talking story about I had moved to the Big Island and was raising alpacas.  He asked "Why alpacas?" and I responded "I tried raising Axis Deer but they kept jumping over my fence and getting away."  He just wagged his finger at me and walked away.  (For locals, this was not long after the helicopter pilot got caught airlifting deer from Maui to Mauna Kea.)

I have spent alot of time on Oahu and I have not noticed that either.  Most Hawaiians are so caught up in just trying to pay for their livelihood, they barely notice the white boy.

Funny enough, I’m in Oahu right now, staying in the country. hauula.  We always do. We shop at local stores, We hang with locals on the beach. We’ve never had a bad experience

Well, after a day of research, I have concluded that it's expensive as hell to hunt in Hawaii and the gun/hunting  regulations make a Canadian moose trip look uncomplicated and cheap.

Of course, we already have both axis and Mouflon here, no gun or season restrictions. In fact they care classed as varmits and can be hunted anytime with anything.  Looks like I'll have to keep going to the Keys for the fishing.

Not flying to HI to hunt what I can accidentally hit with a vehicle, either.

Yep, icky guns

I don’t know who owns that company - TFC, I’m guessing - but it’s promotional literature wasn’t written by someone with English as their first language.

Weird how my wife and I have been regularly going to Hawaii for over 20 years, and have never once met one of those people.

(We don't stay in hotels, we rent a house, shop at the local stores, etc.)

Don't get me wrong.  I am SURE they exist, just like every state/country has assholes.  But I think the prevalence of them is hugely over-exaggerated on ARFCOM.  I also suspect that it might be more of a Honolulu/Oahu thing, and not an overall Hawaii thing.

It's typically of GD to say stuff they've never experienced. More often then not, you're the problem, not local people. Obviously there's shit heads too.
