Wow, I have been reading reviews nonstop for two days and my head is spinning. Way to many options and opinions out there.

Any sugestions?

I would like wireless, but if a wired set is better I'll settle.
I want it to work.
I don't want to eat through batteries like there's no tomorrow.
I have an average sized head and average sized ears, I don't want it to hurt.
Not looking to spend a mint, but I do want something good.

I have an xbox 360 and run it through HDMI into my reciever with optical sound. I would like to keep it that way.

Turtle Beach headsets are alright for the money. X12s are wired, functional, and cost about $60 on the lower end.  Or you could get the PX5s, I think they're wired and they're surround sound. The X42s are alright for wireless I think, I had X41s and they were alright.

I've never used Tritons, but they seem to be popular.

In games where the sound is channeled properly and works right, and putting cost aside, Astros are the way to go, IMO.

I have Turtle Beach XP 500s. If you can swing the scratch, they're worth it. I love them for gaming, and I haven't gotten knifed in Battlefield 3 since I bought 'em.

Triton Technologies AX720s

You can't go wrong.

I own a pair of them.
