My health insurance through my school will be ending in August, and I need to get a new policy. I was hoping you guys could provide some advice.

I'm currently 28 and make enough that I don't qualify for any assistance, and am working as a contractor in IN, so the company does not contribute anything. I'm also engaged, but my fiance has insurance, so I don't need to worry about that (for now). The insurance I had in the past was rarely used, and I think I'm looking for mainly catastrophic or high deductible insurance.

What are my options for coverage, and what has worked well for you in the past? I would like to avoid paying the penalty if possible, but am really just looking for the least expensive option.

Thanks

I can't tell you much, but I was in pretty much the same boat as you 9 months ago -- I'm 29 now, and I bought insurance for the first time late last year. I went to the NC Exchange and searched for the cheapest plan BC/BS had -- 7k deductible in network (14k out), fuck-all coverage otherwise, premiums ~$170/mo.

It's not cheaper than the penalty yet, but in a year or two that penalty will be a real son of a bitch.
