I am not a LEO (yet) still stuck in the army.  I know when troops roll out downrange we have hearing protection 24/7.  So I was wondering, do most cops carry hearing protection?  I dont think Ive ever seen any LEO's wearing it during just regular stuff, but do departments usually issue it?  My guess is its just one of those things you leave in the car til you need it but I am curious, how do those of you who do this for a living actually go about it?

Don't carry hearing protection.  If I have to get into a LE shooting, I'll just deal with the potential hearing loss.  I wear hearing protection religiously on the range but don't carry any in my vehicle for on duty use.

There's a huge difference with troops in a combat zone where gunfire and explosions are common place. In law enforcement shootings are rare enough that you just take the risk. That said, I keep earpro with my carbine, but obviously if I get in a shooting with my handgun, I won't have earpro handy.

Each patrol car has a set of ear pro ( muff type ) in the trunk.
I carry a couple of old GI ear plugs in my pocket for the frequent dispatching of deer

Always carried them just for active shooter situtations.  A lot of school buildings have the most insane fire alarms designed to DRIVE you out fo the building. Can't communiciate, cannot think clearly.  Much  easier to deal with when you have plugs in.

I keep a pair of Peltor 6S's hooked to my active shooter for that same reason, plus for the previously mentioned finishing off animals.

For normal field use there just isn't time.  In both my OIS's I was more concerned with pulling the trigger than putting on ear pro.  If I lost a fraction of hearing because of them, so be it, I'm still alive.

I keep a pair of foamies in my bag for putting down animals. Never thought about using them in an active shooter situation...

A lot of house alarms here have that pulsating thing going on and the annoying voice screaming "alarm! alarm! Get out of the house!" or some such thing. Very annoying and I use my plugs for those as well

Interesting.  I hadn't considered those situations but glad to have a little more knowledge.  Thank you

The thought of carrying ear pro on duty has never crossed my mind to be honest.

How many of you never fire your guns outside of a range environment? I put down 50-60 deer a year easily. Thats a lot of cumulative hearing damage if you don't do anything to mitigate the damage

Poor deer. How many dogs a year do you shoot?

Since I like to have my range gear with me, I carry electronic ears and my in-ear ones are in a pocket on a tac vest.

I can't help that the lefty Bambiists in my area are convinced that hunting deer is sinful, so its left to the front bumpers of cars to cull the herd
