We have a heat pump in our house and we also use a wood stove. However our stove only holds about a good four hour burn which does not really help during the work week. My question is about turning the heat pump on and off vs. letting the thermostat do its job. From Thursday evening til Monday we can keep the stove hot enough but from monday eve. til Thurs. it is just too cold.

Am I hurting the heat pump by physically turning it off or should I leave it on and let the thermostat do its job. I am also planning on getting one of the programmable thermostats in the very near future.

Thanks

You could do either and it won't hurt it.  I have a similar setup except mine is a pellet stove.  I just leave the thermostat on its normal setting.  Once I let the stove burn out, the heat pump kicks on and keeps the house nice and warm.

You might look into not putting in a programable thermostat for a heat pump.  Heat pumps like to keep steady temps...they take too long to warm up the house if the temps have really dropped in my opinion.

Your not going to hurt your heat pump, it's just a machine that turns on and off, either by the t/stat or you.

It's up to you on how much you want it to operate.

Now ,turning it on and off every 2 minutes is another story, but I don't see you wanting to do that.
