Wanna really rant?  Dump about 50 gallons on the ground and let your local EPA know about it.

Been there too.........Old oil tank was leaking, Had to dig up about a 10 foot X 5 foot by 5 foot deep hole in my cellar(dirt floor). 2 test wells drilled in the yard. The house is an 1880's era house with a stone foundation. They had to stay 6 inches away from the foundation during digging

Test came back negative for ground water contamination

We started this last May, and I just got the report last week. Waiting for the NHDES to make the final disposition. When that comes through, if the State closes our case, the wells get pulled and I can level off my floor in the cellar and hopefully pour a concrete floor. And get our life back to normal without the state poking around.

We had to put in a concrete pad for the new fuel tank, per NHDES.....New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services that is!!

Sounds like you made out pretty well.  Heating oil typically doesn't go far from the source, but with shallow groundwater and sandy soil, you can have a real mess on your hands fast.

The soil was really packed in the cellar, plus it was kinda gravely and rocky. I did find out that Olive Drab colored soil is not a good thing!

At first they were talking about setting up monitoring equipment in the cellar to detect the fumes and such. After they did the excavation they decided it was not necessary.

They also bounced around the idea of putting in a cement floor, also not needed now. They did set up a piping/vent system in the bottom of the hole they dug, and ran a vent pipe up the side of the house. I am not sure how long that has to stay there.

I lucked out by doing things by the book, saved me a shit pile of money as the state has a fund that comes out of one of the fuel taxes. We qualified so that was cool. I didn't know that I had been paying into that fund for years!!

I'll have to give some serious thought as to what I want to do before next heating season. I am sure it will be over $4.00 a gallon next year and that will be hard to keep up with.

It would be nice to switch over to electric heat, but I would just be swapping out one large utility for another, It could actually cost me more using electric heat.

Maybe Obama will give me a big chunk of that free money thing!!!

Yeah.
We just had a nasty spike, as well.  Expected to hit 5+ a gallon by fall.
