Just thought I would send a big howdy to my fellow Arfcommers. Just left Beijing and Xian, on our way to the Three Gorges, then Shanghai.

Been looking for a surplus store, but no joy. One of the Heroic Revolutionary Monuments in Tiananmen Square has some very accurate representations of weaponry (Broomhandle, ZB-26, Moisin Nagants, etc.)

Why dont you describe the TSA, and the TSA VIPER Checkpoints, the various banking regulations that not only US expatriates go through, but forces sovereign nations banks to submit various forms and information to the IRS/US government.  And to top it all off, go into a convenience store, purchase alcohol and tobacco, then walk to your hotel enjoying said beverage and see what anyone thinks.

I fucking love it over there!  My company has an office in HK and we started some new business in Taipei.  I hope to be spending a lot more time over there.

Except for the beer and the women the novelty wears off after the first 15 or 20 years.  I've spent most of the past 40 years in Asia, mostly Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

If you go back through Beijing and have the time spend a couple of hours at the PLA military museum. Lots of firearm and artillery on display and exhibits on the war of Japanese Aggression and Liberation.

There's a little bit if surplus at the Panjiayuan market. Remember everything is negotiable..

I have seen that museum.  I got separated from my group and began wandering on my own. I stumbled across our bus and the driver pointed out the museum.  Off I went.  I am not sure if I was supposed to be there as they had a lot of anti-US exhibits then (early '80's).

From what my relatives tell me.
Bring your own TP everywhere (little white packets of tissue)
Drink bottled water. Order an extra cup of hot tea to wash your utensils before you eat in a restaurant.

If you stop in Vietnam you may leave with an 18 year old super model wife. If you stop in Japan, get a Godzilla lighter  .... way cool.

You only need to wash chopsticks in hot tea in the street type restaurants (China).  The TP is useful, but when in doubt just look for a McDonalds if you really have to shit.

I haven't been to Vietnam, but I have lived in Tokyo and lighters were the last thing I was concerned about.

Tokyo nightclubs are crawling with young hotties.

This all depends on how much rain/snow/wind you get. A typhoon in a city is usually enough to clean the air for 2-3 days.

I first visited the Military Museum in 1982 as an exchange student and was surprised to see captured US weaponry, including tanks and aircraft, in particular a shot down U-2.  As I was stationed on Taiwan during the early to mid 70s I knew that both PLA pilots had defected to Taiwan and ROC pilots had defected to the Mainland during the cold war, but to actually see the ROC (U.S.-supplied) aircraft was an experience.

Not seen much evidence of big Ta-Ta's on the younger women, but this is defintely a land of major league derrieres and legs. Although it was near freezing in Beijing, lotsa very short skirts, leggings, skinny jeans, spandex and high heels on some very pretty young women. Talk about your Cultural Revolution!
