The criteria are simple: (1) more precise than base models, (2) 16.1" barrel, and (3) preferably <5lbs, but definitely <6lbs.

What would you recommend?

The closest one I have so far is the model 21133.  It is 5.3lbs, but I think I like the idea of a takedown model.  Not sure to what extent taking it down affects accuracy, so I would appreciate any thoughts on that.

i don't know about being more precise....but i just built one out with a Faxon pencil profile barrel (that had to be thermal fit) and the BX trigger in the Magpul MOE X-22 stock with a 1X Primary Arms prism scope....based on previous experience I would consider it to be more accurate than an off the shelf 10/22 and still really lightweight

Precision and take-down, while not necessarily mutually exclusive, will be a challenge.

Thank you.  I did not specify a budget on purpose, but after looking at the Kidd prices, I think I'd have a hard time justifying >$1k to myself.

I bought one a few months ago and am very pleased with the accuracy. I’ve had multiple 5 shot groups in the 0.3” range @50 with Norma match, SK rifle match, and Lapua LR.  It’ll average less than 0.5” @ 50 with the above ammo. CCI Std and Tac 22 are more like 0.6-0.7”.

I shot a 10 round group suppressed at 100 this morning with Lapua LR. 9 went into 0.9” and one flyer opened it up to 1.4”. Definitely an ammo issue as the round went supersonic.

For $350, I'm happy!

Volquartsen trigger, Kidd barrel, magpul stock. Hux .22ti can. Had it out squirrel hunting this morning. Probably a lot heavier than what you want.

Its easy to do if building one.

I wanted lighter weight and precision.
TacSol receiver $550
Volquartzen CF barrel $250
Kidd single stage trigger w/ext mag release $325
KRG chassis $375

More spend than I'd anticipated, but its light enough and it shoots bugholes.

Check out Bergara BXR, they come in steel or carbon barreled versions. I have not shot one personally, but I have handled a few and they are very nice. They fix everything I like to change on a 10/22 (like the stock and barrel), without being ridiculously expensive.

If I had to buy instead of building, I would consider one. But personally, I like building so I tend to go that route.  Most of my 10/22s have started as basic carbine models. I do have one built on a Brownells receiver and bolt. It shoots very well.

Ruger bought in a pawnshop, $92
Brimstone tier two trigger workup. $79
Feddersen 16.5 threaded, fluted bull barrel. $170
Raptor stock $75 ebay
Unertl Hawk 4x scope ebay $85
Kidd mag release  $18.50
CPC bolt squaring, extrtor pinning and jeweling $50

Total cost $569.50

That was my price for all the parts some new some used.  I put this together 5 years ago, prices have changed thanks bidenomics.
Rimfire central always has stocks on the cheap.

He doesn’t want to spend money on a Kidd, so JP’s likely out of the question too. Besides, a Kidd super grade will outshoot it all day.

Model 11113 Talo tactical since it had a threaded barrel. Took the action out or the silly ATI stock and put it in a standard Hogue overmolded unit. Put on a Sniper Brand 4-16x50 scope. Yeah I know the scope is overkill but who gives a shit, I can see tacks at ridiculous distances.
Added a Kidd trigger kit too.

All in about $600 ish. around 6 years ago. Traded for the rifle $300 cost of my side of the trade. Got $85 for the ATI stock=cost of the Hogue OM. Scope was $100 nib at a gun show. Kidd trigger was $120 iirc. Bought everything within a month or so, it all just came together once I decided I wanted a 10/22 again back then.

It really likes CCI of any flavor,  Remington Yellow Jacket, Aguilar. It's not very picky about ammo, which I appreciate.

Targets are usually Necco wafers at 50 yards, and Nilla wafers at 75 yards. A suppressor is coming before too long.

It's one of my favorite guns to shoot. I call it "the grin reaper"

Get creative, take your time, and shop around. I got exactly what I wanted without spending boutique gun money,

I have two 10/22’s.  If I was in the market for a new rimfire rifle, I would look at the Winchester Wildcat.  Takes 10/22 mags.  Seems well liked.

Yep, they're a great value when you add together all the upgrades. I mounted the Meopta 4-16 in LaRue QD rings on this one for a friend. Very accurate and 4.7lbs out of the box.

This is you want a Ruger action, otherwise buy a used Marlin and slap a scope on it.  Cheaper, lighter, more accurate.  Yes, I've owned Riuger incuding a Target model with Volquartsen parts and the only thing the Ruger did better was the scope mount, which didn't make any real difference at the distances I was shooting or to the critters I shot.

I did the opposite of you. Volquartsen barrel and a Kidd trigger with the magpul stock. It’s a heck of a shooter. If you look you can find similar guns on the used market for a little over half of what it cost to build one. A buddy got a Magnum Research 10/22 with a C More sight for $650 shortly after I put mine together.

Shot Appleseed with the middle one, without the can, did pretty good with it.

Had to change the scope mount.

Why not the factory Takedown Lite? It's everything you want. https://ruger.com/products/1022Lite/specSheets/21152.html. You could buy a takedown receiver and build it with a lightweight barrel from Volquartsen/TacSol whoever. I like my Tacsol but I've never shot it on paper and only used it for steel which is a drastically different game compared to precision. Really depends on what you want.

Start with a base 10/22 and throw away everything but the receiver, order up every VQ part available,  then what VQ doesn't have Kidd will . After that order up a Lilja barrel , top it with a scope of your choice ( I used a Mueller) and slap it in a Fagen stock .  Then when your done you can look at it and say " I should have just bought a built Kidd rifle and been money ahead" . After that sell it at a loss and buy a CZ 455 Precision trainer . Or atleast that's how I did it .

I sell a lot of those.  Rebate just ended.  Very lightweight b/c the receiver is plastic.  Nice irons.

This.

No matter what 'improvements' you make it will still be limited by the Ruger part.

I have a Volquartzen that is more accurate than any of my builds. All are accurate, but the Volquartzen shoots lasers. But most custom accurate barrels require match ammo at the minimum.
