What is this weird thing called? Star head? I'm trying to find a driver with very small outer dia, my socket won't fit the hole.Attached File

A 12-point socket of the correct size should fit that.

Of course your socket won't fit the hole.

You need a cylindrical bit to fit that hole, obviously.

12 point torque dissipation screw

That would be a cap screw, not a machine screw. Also, as said before it's a "ferry head" or 12 point head.

Not trolling, I thought it had more than 12 points as it is a proprietary part number from customer. The hole in question is the counterbore of the part, not the screw head hole.

Possibly need this, also. but a good quality 12-point thinwall socket should fit.

I have frequently had to turn down, or otherwise modify sockets and other tools for specific jobs.

The lathe at the shop was not working and the only socket I had was a personal one. I tightened it with a torx bit in the center hole but it was not fully seated. Our customer has no intention of making things easy.

MFG is always gonna give shit a proprietary P/N. Why would you get Widget X from any online dealer for $10 when you could by it from them for $80?!?

I'm always looking for alternate vendors for parts when I can (scientific equipment). If they EVER leave the OEM P/N on a piece I'm Googling like a mofo.
$340 for a fan? NOPE. $45 from the manufacturer.
$450 for a filter? NOPE. $25 from the MFG.
And so on...

But of course sometimes they actually have an OEM make a "special" version just for them. Had a little precision electric motor fail and Google turned up a couple vendors of it MINUS the suffix letters. Called the OEM with the P/N and they said, "NOPE. Special run for company X, we can't sell them to you." So a motor that should be about $50 wound up costing (wait for it) $1600!!!

No kidding. Although this one is reasonably easy, many of us have no formal training, no family background, or no mentors in fields that can be very deeply specialized.

We learn out way through life and take it as it comes.

Over the years I have seen that type of bolt used in many applications to do with braking systems on various types of vehicles and aircraft
