So, in the near future I'm going to be picking up my first concealed carry weapon. I'd also like to be able to use the same gun as a nightstand weapon. I'm turning to you guys for some suggestions. I'm open to anything really but would like to stay under $600 so no Kimber or Dan Wesson please. Thanks in advance!
Also, sorry about the limited guns in the poll, sort of jumped the gun on setting it up. Forgive the noob please |

test drive all the different pistols you would consider for the job, whatever one fits you the best, and you are the most comfortable with...BINGO This^, all the ones in your poll are good IMHO, but the one you shoot and handle best will be the best for you. |

Anything but one of those ugly Glocks.
If you want to go striker fired at least get a Springfield Armory XD of some sort. Personally I'm a 1911 guy but I wouldn't recommend that to a newbie in the handgun arena. You need to get one that you can shoot well, If there is an indoor range near you that rents handguns go there and try out as many as you can. If you can't shoot it well then you don't want it. |

I've shot most of the ones in my poll, and liked them all really. I'm just tryin to gauge which one "the majority" recommends. |

I voted 1911. You don't need an "upgradable 1911".
My RIA works great out of the box. My SR1911 works great out of the box. My really old Norinco still works great. I think a lot of the "1911s are unreliable" crap comes from people "upgrading" their 1911s. That said, I would not really recommend a 1911 or Glock/any other striker fired pistol for a first handgun. |

Actually, I wouldn't recommend a 1911, a Glock, or any other striker fired pistol. I would go with a good DA/SA like a Sig, HK, or Ruger P series. |
| Where do you live, how big are you, what's the largest caliber you can shoot without issues, does the state you live in consider "printing" to be exposing the weapon,is it an open carry state so if your shirt crawls up are you covered, how are you planning to carry, boots or tennis shoes, what type of clothes do you wear on a normal day? This is the start of about a 100 things you need to think about. There's no such thing as a universal carry gun for every one. I can carry a full size 1911 easily but the I'm 6'9" and weigh in at 320. Someone 5'2" 110 might not be able to pull that off without careful clothes selection. I would recommend carrying just one gun in the same place everyday, the same way everyday. I know people who carry different guns in different style holsters everyday but when it hits the fan, I want to know I'll reach to the right spot and hit the right controls, without taking time to think about it. |

| To all of those with the misconception that I have no handgun experience, thank you for taking that into consideration. However, that is not the case, I am fully capable of operating all of the weapons in my poll and have a least a passing knowledge of most of the other ones that have been mentioned in the thread. This will be my first conceal carry pistol I have owned, not my first pistol. As to my size I'm about 5'8" and 150 lbs so I'm not gonna be able to conceal overly large or thick guns. |

I'm 5'7" 165lbs and I OC or CCW three different full size 1911's. Why full size? Because I can hit what I'm shooting at with a full size, under pressure I don't do so well with compacts. The 1911 is the most beautiful and best shooting pistol out there - that's my choice. |

Look at what subject matter experts carry/shoot in classes/ win competitions with. That's INSANITY!!! Way better to get advice from a bunch of folks on the internet.... That said, G19 is the way to go. (And you'll find it matches the criteria in the above quote) |

Even though it's not a small gun, I like how thin it is compared an XD or something like that. |
