It seems a skunk has decided he likes jrzy's new house and sprayed not to far away from the back of the house when I let our dog out for her final business of the day.
She didn't get a direct hit but must have walked through the cloud a bit, got her cleaned OK now (I think)

If I shoot this little fucker (head shot) with a sub sonic .22 (night time, quieter) will he still be able to get out a last blast?

Any de-skunking of my OA would be a great help, thanks.
You know the doctor that repaired some damage after a fight I had (ring) said i might lose some of my olfactory sense, THANK GOD!

Easier to trap 'em.
Make the cage small enough that it can't lift it's tail.
If it can't lift, it can't spray.

Easy to kill without the smell then.

Learned that from the pro we have taking care of the swarms of skunks at work.

It will likely get in a last shot out of reflex. They are tough bastards, the best results i have seen are with a 12 gauge and birdshot.

Keep in mind, if he does get one last blast, they are accurate!  My cousin shot one with a pellet gun from about 15-20ft away and the skunk sprayed the gun.

You can kill/trap a skunk, but as soon as it's gone, it seems like another one will always take its place.  Best plan is to find out where they live and make it uninhabitable.

Do NOT shoot a skunk at close range.  They will reflexively spray.

Personally, I don't mind the little striped kitties.  I don't mess with them and they don't stink me up.

I heard if you shoot them in the gut they can't spray then you go for the headshot.

A friend of mine use to trap them.  He'd have a long rope on a live trap and drag it to the river and drown them.

For the smell, nothing works better than non-chlorine dry bleach.  Make a strong solution of it in cool water and spray it on the stink.

These non-chlorine bleaches use sodium  perborate which decomposes to hydrogen peroxide and this is what kills the odor.

For pets, use regular hydrogen peroxide and Downy Fabric softener in your favorite scent.  Rinse after 15 minutes.  It may cause dandruff but that is minor compared to the smell.

There's a kennel product called "Odor Mute" that works well to neutralize the odor--works WELL wherever spray has occurred.

I'd just trap the skunk if it's actually under the porch or too close to the house.  A conibear trap will wham him, though he will at least leak some musk, but hey, that's what they do.  It'll go away, especially with a little Odor Mute.

Be careful when handling the carcass. Around here, skunks are one of the largest carriers of rabies.

to go along with bee if you trap him a 110 conibear would work quite nicely on him if you must kill him face to face make sure you stay in front of him if he can't get his tail end around on you he won't spray  until hes dead at least

I happened to shoot one on Sunday.

Head shot with a CCI CB short.

It sprayed.

A breeze brought the odor to the house.

The yard, house, and vehicles smelled for 48 hours,
but then it was all gone.  The yard doesn't even smell anymore.

WORST part was walking out to put it in a plastic bag.

Use a rake to drag the carcass to you.
If you walk right up, odds are you will step in spray.
And don't put the rake back in the garage for a couple of days.

BTW, I baited with tuna.

Opened a can, sprinkled the liquid all over the grass within 3 feet of where I dumped
the can.  This gets the smell of food out strong so they take notice.
I did this at dusk, and had skunks within an hour.

Don't leave the tuna in the can.  Bastards will grab the can and take off with their prize.
They are like a ferret in that regard.

Dump the tuna on the ground and spread it around a little so they have to
put some time into their meal.

Have you ever smelled mothballs?
Did you have to hold his wings open?

LOL,  my dad had a skunk in his chickenhouse last year and so he took my 8 year old out with him to shoot it.  Well as soon as he opens the chickenhouse door the skunk upends himself and gets fixin' to blast my kid and my dad.

Well dad let him have it with his double barrel 20 guage AYA double but for some reason it doubled on him.

two barrels of 20 gauge birdshot at 6 feet made a mess of that skunk. They both came in the house stinkin' and as soon as my wife smelled my 8 year old she lit into him too.

that day has lived in infamy around our house and it's always good for some laughs.  Whenever they head out the back door to do chores I tell my wife they are going skunk hunting and she lights into him again.

Thats assuming you know where the den is.

In my case, I have no idea where it is.

Failure drill

My dog got sprayed 2 nights ago then procedded to wipe its face on anything it could find including me!

Called the vet to see what to clean the dog with... In the most boring monotonous voice the receptionest read off a list of ingreadients (baking soda, dawn, peroxide and water) then told me it was the 16th spray that night...

Stunk like all hell!

Stinks for about 48 hours then gone...

We had skunks under our front porch.  Mothballs did NOT work.  We tried a fire under the porch- no dice.  Fireworks- no dice.  Trapping- no dice.  Well sure, we trapped them, but they either come back, or another moves in.  Chasing them a couple hundred yards with a BB gun didn't keep them from coming back either(strangely, they didn't spray that time).  We tried all kinds of stuff, nothing worked.

In the end, the only solution was to completely remove the concrete porch, and replace it will gravel and pavers, so they couldn't dig under it.

Although, more recently, I heard cayenne pepper will keep them out- or was that cats?  I don't remember.

We had a skunk have kittens under our deck. Tried mothballs, amonia- no help. and it came back the next year. Tried smokebombs from fireworks. Kept throwing them under for a couple weeks and it moved on. We now use smokebombs anytime we smell skunk and have never had anymore. Hope this helps.

Trap it with a small live trap and some cat food and then drown it.  I have done this lots and lots and only took a hit once.

You can avoid getting sprayed by holding a tarp in front of you as you approach/handle the trap.

I can say from considerable experience that headshooting small animals makes the nervous system go haywire.  If I was to shoot a skunk, it wouldn't be in the head. (In case you're wondering, my dad trapped a lot and I went with him to help.  His method of dispatching coons was a .22 short in the ear.)
Drowning does work, I've seen it done once, I don't believe he sprayed.

Shot another one last night.

Wife was sitting on the porch watching a deer eating out of a bird feeder
when a skunk came out from under the deck.

She froze until it went around the corner of the house.

Guess we know where the den is now.

I let it get to the edge of the yard and was standing in front of the corn
before I shot.   Cleanest kill I've ever had.  The last one rolled around for
a few seconds, but this one was down instantly.  But he still leaked his stink.

Wife emptied a can of Glade air freshener in the house to help combat the smell.

Has anyone else noticed how VERY strong skunk smell is similar to
sniffing a jar of minced garlic?
