We were astounded today when my neighbor's wife walked up to me while I was cutting the grass and told me that about a week ago.

We pretty much keep to ourselves and don't know our neighbors, but he waved when we were both cutting grass at the same time, and when we had a blizzard last year he managed to get out in his 4 wheel drive and called to see if we needed anything from the store.  He was a nice guy, and to my embarassment I don't even really know his NAME.

So how do I find out details?  All I know is his first name Jerry, and I know the street he lives on.  I don't even know which county, the county line passes through my yard and some of the people on my street vary in which county they're listed in.

I've searched the obituaries but our local papers suck and I can't find anything.

Anyone know of a public index where I might be able to search on street name and date range?  I'm trying to find some details as to what happened, and a few other things.

When I say I want details, I don't mean, hey, how'd he do it, was it messy, who found him... I mean, I want to know a bit about the guy I feel like I should have gotten to know when I had the chance.  I'd really just like to see the obit if I can find it, having his name would be a great start.

Ask his wife. You may be surprised that she might want to talk about him.

The police should have filed a report.

Well I would start by bringing a card or something over to the wife.  Then ask if she needs a hand around the house (mowing etc.)  and ask when the time is right.

One of the things wrong with America.....neighbors don't look out for each other anymore.

5 or 6 years ago, when me and the wife lived in a double in the city, our neighbor committed suicide.

He lived down stairs from us, and one morning he just decided to check out.

He went out to the garage, and hung himself with an orange extension cord.

It was surreal when all the cops and coroner and EMTs showed up.

RIP Jim.

This. You'll probably help her and satisfy your curiosity at the same time.

I certainly shall.  I just don't want to deepen her pain by admitting my own ignorance of his name - to us he was always "The Cabin Guy" because they live in a log cabin on the other side of the creek and through the woods.

After I finished cutting my grass I did hers, too.  I'll keep doing that.  Meanwhile I found a better way to search the obits, and found it.  Now at least when I talk to her I don't sound like a completely dolt.

Thanks for the help and advice, brothers.

If the surviving wife owns the home you should be able to search the particular county property tax records by address.

+1 you should know their address so that should be easy.   Unless they rent.
