I've run out of ports on my cable router, and I need to add a couple more devices.

How do I expand my network? Do I need to add a network switch?

A small switch should do fine. If you're experiencing performance issues, then you could think about upgrading.

What is needed to set one up? Are they plug and play?

I use a USB Hub meself: A 7 socket hub purchased from Staples.  It was quite cheap, too.

While I mainly use it to connect flash drives there is no reason it cannot be used to connect devices.

UMM, You cant use a USB hub for this.

All you need is a nice gigabit switch and you will be fine. It's a plug and play device.

You'll grab a cheap powered switch. Connect it's WAN port into a port on your router, then plug the overflow devices into the new switch.

That's it.
