I'm looking to get a socket set for around the house type stuff. I have a few Craftsman tools that I've been using but I've lost a few pieces over the years and wanted to start with a new set. I won't be making a living with these tools, just the occasional oil change, brake job, or fixing the wheel barrel. I'd like to spend less than $100. I was planning on supplementing the socket set with a set of $20 Craftsman wrenches that I saw the other day. Can someone recommend a socket set?
Thanks! |
| If you wander through any Sears store that has a complete tool department, you'll see dozens of different Craftsmen tool sets on sale at any given time. Typically, the sale prices are 30 to 50 percent off of normal price - which makes them an almost unbeatable value for the casual user, IMO. |

Quoted: Used Craftsman tool set on EBay.join the craftsman club too, even better deals in email, and purchases earn points towards gift card type things. I've bought a lot of the old Craftsman iron there. Even if it's broken, you can get it replaced. I've completed several old sets with good quality stuff. Just take your time. |

Most of my sockets are craftsman, deep ones, shallow ones ,all 6point. Get the 6 pt sockets over the 12pt. They do not round off bolt edges as easily. I love them they are not overly thick and hold up very well. Their ratchets on the other hand, complete bovine fecal matter. The gears in them do not hold up well at all. My ampro (autozone maybe?) ratchets hold up better, have a shorter turning between clicks and generally feal better in the hands. For extentions go to harbor freight and get impact extentions they wont break as easy as the chrome plated ones |

Quoted: Harbor Freight cheap set, get more than you need for around $30 It breaks they replace it, you lose it or loan it and it never comes back your not out much Gonna have to disagree there, Harbor Freight's sockets snap like they're made of fuckin' pot metal Their hex drivers and stuff like that is fine for hobby usage, but them socket sets won't get you through a stubborn brake job. Craftsman is the way I go, not much more expensive, and you still get replacement if broken. eta: HF has some decent quality stuff, but I've seen a dude make no less than seven trips replacing the same HF socket... That right there is way more aggravation than the $30 "saved" not buying Craftsman in the first place. |
