I read a book back in junior high and I cannot remember the name and was hoping you guys could help?

It's fiction.
It was written in the early 1970's, I think.
It's about this young guy, probably a teen, who lives in the high desert of SoCal and acts as a hunting guide for extra money.
His latest client turns out to be a nutcase and decides he wants a more exciting hunt, so he hunts the kid.
At one point, the kid is shot in the arm with I think a .22-250. He describes the wound in detail.
The kid finds an old prospectors camp and discovers a wrist rocket and some ball bearings, at from there things turn in his favor.

It was made into a prime time TV drama in maybe 1975 or 1976.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?
