Okay, here's the scenario:
I want to purchase a military-caliber semi-automatic weapon before any potential ban might be enacted. This is not really "panic" buying, as I've been thinking about it for 6 months or so; just can't make a decision. My limited budget is $800 or less. I'm not interested in an AR-type weapon, as I already have 2 of those. I want something different. I have been considering: A) A Romanian PSL "sniper" rifle B) A CETME clone C) CMP M1 Garand D) AK type, maybe a folder (AKs don't really excite me too much) E) Yugo SKS (least attractive choice, but easily affordable - I could buy two!) Which would you go for, or do you have other suggestions that I haven't considered? |
| Either the AK, but if you aren't totaly sold on that, go with the garand. For semi-auto, the garand packs a huge punch, and is built like a tank. One of the few downsides is the low capacity magazine, but if you have 2 ar15s, then mag capacity isn't as big of an issue. They have the service grade for around 600 and correct grade if you can stretch the budget by 150 for 950. |

A) PSL ok if that's what you like. It's basically an AK with a long barrel in 7.62x54R and a scope. B) Some have had good luck, but the two Century CETMEs I owned and fired were very unreliable because Century screwed up the US made receiver specs. They also do things like grind the bolt for correct headspacing, which is a shoddy way to do it. They should be changing out the taper rollers but are too cheap to do it right on the guns that need it. Honestly could not recommend them. CETME did a good job, Century did not, at least on mine. C) I don't think this will be banned, but always a good choice, supplies of UGGI CMP Garands are drying up, and with Obama we may see a restirction on bringing back any more lend lease M1s. D) AK a good hedge against the ban, but very hard to fin at a good price right now. AIM Suplus has the AK74 Tantal in 5.45x39mm for $500 in stock right now, very nice gun. Me, of those I would likely say screw it and get the CMP M1. But if you are trying to hedge against a new ban the AK might be the best bet for now. |

That is the issue, otherwise, a CETME would be my choice hands-down. I've got a buddy with an original pre-ban HK91 (he bought it pre-ban!), and man, what a sweet rifle. But with the import ban and current prices, a CETME is the only choice in that area that I'm aware of. And yeah, I know folding stock AKs drive libs up the wall, so that thought appeals to me, but I just don't think I REALLY want one. |
