I am looking for a back pack.  I do not want one with a metal frame that is made for heavy loads. I want something that can comfortably fit/hold about  20 pounds of gear.

Looking for something high quality that the straps won't rip off, is very water resistant and well built.

It'll spend most of it's life in my truck packed with useful things that one may need in the event of becoming stranded etc.

Any suggestions??

Check out Spec Ops.

They have their T.H.E. Pack on close out for about $90.

Maybe be bigger than what you need but you can't go wrong with made in the USA.

If you had have an REI or similar store near you, go try out some packs and see what feels good. Then look for a lightly used model on EBay. I have several Gregory packs and can't say enough good things about them. All were purchased via EBay at a fraction of their retail cost.

20 pounds isn't a very heavy load. There are a ton of packs that will do fine with that kind of weight limit. Check out Grey Ghost Gear & look at their 3 day & assault packs.
Also you don't need a metal frame for 20 pounds, a couple of stays or a plastic frame sheet should be just fine.

I went through a bunch of packs while rock climbing...

So, I consider a backpack to maybe be a wearable/lifespan item, in order to save weight...

But I bought the tactical tailor backpack & have been real happy with it, as a range gear bag, putting on my motorcycle...   and those sort of activities do wear out stitching, etc...  but the TT bag has held up perfectly & still use it today

When you say stranded, do you mean stuck in a snowstorm or high centered on some back road 70 miles from town?
Also, do you think you may have to kill your way out?

Not to add to the confusion, but I'd submit that the 5.11 packs are very nice.  I have had a Rush72 for a couple years now and love it.

I bought a couple from Midway last year for about $35 apiece.
