Hi and thanks for looking. I want a revolver that meets the following criteria. Please post pics if possible of your recommendation. -Good brand of course (quality is essential) -Beyond reasonable power (357mag BARE minumum) -Short barrel (between 2"- 4") -Modern style; Not cowboy style (ie. cylinder, grip etc) -Must allow pinky finger to have a firm grip on gun -Unreasonably powerful caliber (did I mention that before?) -BEEFY Looking -Stainless Steel or better finish (not blue) -Preferably below $500, but I can go over My most favorite pick would be the S&W .500cal revolver with a 4" barrel, but unfortunately for that price I could get an AR, so I can't justify buying it. Thanks again! |

If you want a decent .44 mag for cheap... consider the Ruger redhawk or super redhawk... only problem is the barrel may be two long for your tatses. The Ruger GP 100 is a nice, short .357 revolver. Another option may be going with a Taurus. Personally, I dont buy these because I dont like the style. Regardless, Taurus makes a decent gun from what I am told. If you want a Dirty Harry style .44 go for a used S&W model 29. The modern equivelent is the 629, which you can buy new. These cost more than $500 though. I think these come in shorter barrel lengths than the Ruger. I have the 5 1/2" 629 myself and love it. |
I've got a 2.5" 686, even with "hot" loads it's pretty easy to control. My recommendation. Any thing more powerful in a 2" barrel is hard to control. |

Along witht eh S&W 686, also consider a Colt Python with a 4" barrel. They are a very fine revolver. Used they can be had for $500. They are available in stainless or blued. Python is only available in .357 magnum caliber. They have a very "sweet" action, it's why they are known and prized. Do you reload? If yes, the cost and availability of ammo will be dependant only upon you. |
If you want to go with the 454, my buddy just got a Taurus Ragin Bull in i think 6". Packs a hell of a kick, but still pretty controllable. |
That is one mean snubnose

Nice. I've been looking for one of those for years. I know a guy who picked up one in a pawn shop for less than $200. Those old revolvers don't sell as well as semiautos around here. I call first dibs if you ever think about selling it. |
WORD! Shoots .45ACP well. Now, if I could only find .45 WinMag or 460 Rowland for cheap. |
Shoots .45ACP as well? Sounds like a winner! Please give me some more info on this thing! (can't find it on gunbroker) |
I carried a S&W 681 as a police reserve 1991-1993. Before they allowed reserves to carry autos in my town. I should have never let that gun go. It's the same as a 686 except with a fixed rear site. I could hit anything with it. I had to get a 686 to replace it. |

I am not a huge revolver fan, but I thought that the only revolvers I would ever like were S&Ws. And, don't get me wrong, they are great guns. But having had a chance to fire a couple different Taurus Trackers (7-shot .357Mag with 4" barrel), I've decided that that will be my next gun. Both examples that I shot were outstanding. It'a also Taurus's best selling revolver. -Troy |

It has a few blems in the finish. I paid 350 for it. I find the recoil stout and not fun to shoot a lot. The tarus you saw sounds a bit high priced to me. I plan on shooting 44 specials with my smith. Good luck in your search |
If you meant they are not available in .44, yes - but Pythons were factory-made in other calibers. And yes, they are very fine (perhaps the finest) DA revolvers. Lockedon, you can probably find a used Colt Anaconda in your price range. .44 Magnum, SS, beefy as all get-out - looks like a Python on steroids. I had a 4" Anaconda and let it get away - one of those I really regret! www.colt.com/CMCI/Anaconda.asp ETA: PIC of 4" model. (The pic on the Colt website above under the 4" heading looks like it has a longer barrel?...) |
Better contact Dan Wesson directly for that. |
