Am I correct to say that twenty years or so more ago when somebody was on trial for something like murder or other serious crime, the news agencies would show courtroom drawings or sketches of the trial but no actual video footage?  

If so, when did they start showing real footage?

Court TV existed, but OJ made the coverage, and the network.  Hell, my work place listened to OJ on the radio

Late 80s in California IIRC for the video cameras.  Just almost no one was interested in video from Los Angeles Superior Court.  And in a moment, the results of that trial
