Thank you . . .

. . for contacting me to express your concerns about the economic recovery plan recently passed by Congress. I supported this legislation because I believe our first priority right now should be about creating jobs right here in America.

Just last year, we lost 2,589,000 jobs in the United States - the worst yearly job loss since 1945. Over one million of those jobs were lost just in November and December.

We cannot afford to return to the failed economic policies of the past. It is long past time to change course.

The economic recovery package recently passed by the Senate will create up to 4 million American jobs and will rebuild our American middle class. The bill will put money into the pockets of working families right away, and will create jobs immediately to help get our economy moving again. It also makes critical investments in the long-term growth of our economy - investments other countries have already made - so that we can better compete in the global economy.

I have been leading the fight to embrace the new green economy and to create new green-collar jobs in Michigan. This is about doing what we've always done in Michigan - embracing opportunities and leading the world in innovation. With our strong manufacturing and agricultural industries, and some of the best research universities in the nation, Michigan will play a leading role in wind, solar, biofuel, and electric vehicle production.

The bill includes an unprecedented $2 billion to support the domestic production of advanced hybrid vehicle batteries and hybrid electrical systems. This will create new manufacturing jobs in America, and ensures that when domestic automakers build the hybrid and electric cars of the future, they can use American-made battery technology to power those vehicles.

The economic recovery bill also includes nearly $130 billion for energy efficiency, renewable energy, electricity grid modernization, and public transportation, creating hundreds of thousands of green-collar jobs in America. These include jobs weatherizing homes and buildings to be more energy efficient, saving money for businesses and consumers well into the future.

The Senate plan will put people to work right away with $884,623,000 that will go to Michigan to help rebuild crumbling highways and bridges, and over $4.6 billion nationally for the Corps of Engineers that will create as many as 37,000 new jobs in the private sector. Importantly for Michigan, the bill directs $6 billion for jobs repairing our water and sewer systems, which will help clean up our Great Lakes and ensure a continuing safe supply of drinking water.

Middle-class tax cuts are an important part of this recovery plan. The bill will provide relief from the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) for up to 24 million Americans. Instead of directing tax cuts at the wealthiest Americans, it puts money in the pockets of middle-class families making less than $150,000. It helps families who are struggling with rising tuition costs for college and allows up to $2500 for tuition and related expenses paid for each of the four years of college. Finally, it expands the child tax credit to cover more families.

The bill also provides immediate help for businesses and families hit hardest by the recession. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, I have been leading our efforts to help companies modernize and invest in the future. With this package, companies that report a loss on their tax returns can cash in their built-up tax credits to retool facilities, hire more workers, and purchase equipment to make their companies more energy efficient.

The recovery bill extends unemployment insurance to make sure workers struggling to find work can keep the heat on this winter and put food on the table. It also extends the Trade Adjustment Assistance program to provide job training to workers who have been hurt by unfair trade practices and extends COBRA coverage so displaced workers can still afford health care.

The Senate economic recovery bill makes major investments in rebuilding America and creating new jobs right here at home. It helps those hurt hardest by the recession in the short term; it invests in our children's future with modernized schools and science research; it paves the way for major new advances in health care; and it looks to the future by creating jobs and opportunity in the new green economy.

Thank you again for contacting me. As always, please continue to keep me informed about issues of concern to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Debbie Stabenow

United States Senator

After going through exactly what you're going through, I gave up on StabMeNow, she's a party hack and nothing more.  She's trying to emulate Commie Carl to keep her seat as long as he has... What I wouldn't give to see her and Commie Carl finally get the boot but considering the level of entitlement mentality here in Michigan it's never gonna happen... I've decided Michigan is a lost cause and plan on moving to Texas or Florida within a year...
