Had a brief power outage yesterday, no surge
win 10
now hit the power up button and it starts to power up and a box in the screen center asks for a password which she never had .
Hit the button while powering up to start in safe mode no dice , password box comes up again.

Any help?

Use the Restore Disc that they asked you to make?
If you didn't make one, you can probably find an image for a boot disc on the internet somewhere.
Or just do a restore from your last backup.

Purchased new computer with Windows 10 on it a year or so ago.
Spent hours setting it up, transferring files etc.
2 days later it asked for a password like your describing when I started it up.
Wtf?
Microsoft help desk asked if I could see my e-mail address on the screen asking for my password.
When I answered no they told me there was nothing they could do to access it.
I had to return it and get a new one.
And yes it had a ton of sensitive crap on it in files.
Some serious wtf there.

Look for other log in options.

My work comp just got 10. I had to find where I could put in my pin.

At first it prompted me for a password that I dont have.

Get a UPS.
Plug in your PC, monitor, router and/or modem into it so you can safely shut down your computer if an outage happens again.

if it hibernated and went to sleep the password box shows up sometimes.  Hit enter should go away.

that will be 1 hr minimum support rate @ $65

Sort of a long shot but have you tried just clicking on the password box and without entering anything hitting enter? Or just hit enter.

I have had a password box pop up when no password was necessary.

Try her email passwords.

MS has some sort of fucked up idea the Windows Live account, email account, and local machine account should be the same. It might have ended up with the email password in configuration.

Also, try a blank password.

There are ways to reset it if you can can boot off a CD or thumb drive.

OP, at the login screen, try clicking on the power icon, press and continue to hold your shift key and select restart. Once it reboots, just select the troubleshooting option. From there, you can use the advanced settings to restore it, boot into safe mode etc,..

What kind of computer is it?  Is this a password box IN Windows, or immediately when the machine starts up?
