Hello!

Im having an issue with my 10-10 police trade in. I notice that the revolver will cycle irregularly - sometimes it will rotate and other times will not.

I opened up the gun inspected all the parts, cleaned, lightly lubed, reassembled, and am still experiencing a problem. Nothing seemed broken or overly worn, but I'm definitely not an expert.

What I have noticed is that when I hold the gun at a downward angle (muzzle to ground) the hand will remain in the correct position and cylinder will properly cycle. If I angle it the opposite way the hand does not stay forward (falls slightly back so it no longer gets positive contact with the extractor) and the cylinder stays put.

This movement is also noticeable when I shake the gun as you can hear the hand freely moving back and forth causing a small rattling noise when everything else is nice and tight.

I was hoping someone could help me out.

Did I mess up the reassembly? Is there a chance a part is worn or broken? Should I see a gunsmith since I don't know what the hell I'm doing?

Any help is appreciated thanks!

Send it back to Smith and Wesson for repair.

I was under the impression that police trades aren't eligible for warranty work. Has anyone tried?

Even if the work needed isn`t under a warranty their prices are very good.

The spring that keeps the hand forward is either weak, not engaged properly, or not there.

I also would sent it to S&W.  Unless you have a good gunsmith in your area.

Item 71 has to engaged correctly to keep tension on the hand:

Agreed. And I might replace the hand as well.

Ah ok makes sense - I had never taken the gun down internally before and experienced the issue before and it is being replicated now after my reassembly. Is there an issue with my reassembly that would prevent that spring from reengaging or is this an indication of a worn or broken spring?

There is a pivot pin on the hand and a pin to engage the spring.
You probably didn't get the spring engaged.

Looks like I'm a dope thanks for the help everyone! I'm gonna redo it and hopefully it will work. When I took the side plate off the first time the hand just fell out along with the hammer block - could the spring be shot?
