Had to build my daughter a new porch for her mobile home. I've got the deck itself done, but I know very little about the steps and want to make sure they'll pass inspection. If anyone could help with the stringers I would greatly appreciate it.

The deck height is 36" to the bottom of the deck planks.I was planning on using 2 deck planks as the run which would be 11' I was hoping to use the pre-cut stringers at Lowes, but don't know which ones 3,4 or 5 risers.I've watched the videos from Lowes and have a general idea, but I like to know for sure before I attempt anything.I think I can cut my own with the proper calculations if you guys can help me figure them out.

Thanks

If the height is 36" to the framing, I'm assuming height to top of decking is 37 1/2".

If that's the case, you'll need a rise height of either 6 1/4" (6 steps) or 7 1/2" (5 steps), whichever you prefer. I usually make the steps at least three feet wide. Also, you'll want to use pressure treated lumber.

It's easiest to use 2x12 and draw out the stair pattern with a framing square and stair gauges (hexagonal shaped clamps that attach to the framing square at the determined rise and run locations). You'll want to check out some pics if this isn't clear.

The only tricky part is the bottom riser- you have to draw it out 1 1/2 inches shorter in the rise (the thickness of your decking material) in order for the steps to match. Here the risers all have to be within 3/8" of each other to meet code.
