We are getting ready to connect with DSL at work (finally!), we have a small 5 desktop WinXP network. We down our computers every night and we don't have a server that needs to be connected to the outside world nor do we have any need to connect to our network remotely, we just need to have outbound access the web. I need a plug & play firewall solution to prevent any access to our server & work stations while on line during the busness day. Don't need wireless. We have a 5 port 3COM switch that is full. Looking at a Netgear FVS318, is this what I need to do the job? Need to leave some opening for future technology expansion as well. Tnx.

Have been reading up on windows networking,  a good router is the first step.  one should provide a basic firewall.

good luck and have fun.

You should be fine with a linksys 5 port router with built-in firewall. Block everything you can inbound.

I'd stay away from NetGear. I would also get rid of the 3com and just get a 5 port Linksys workgroup switch/hub.

like TheStig said.   DSL modem >  Router > Switch       < computers

you can always add another hub or switch later.  up to 253  systems, so you have room for expandablity

i use linksys.

What about D-Link?

With the Linksys I'm seeing lots of mixed reviews, firmware issues, problems esp. with DSL connections, less issues with cable connections, seem to be alot of setup issues too.

Get yourself one of the little SonicWall TZ170's.

It's an excellent box for what you are trying to accomplish.  It'll be worth the extra coin, trust me.
