Someone gave me this chicken. I have no idea what breed it is. It's young, but I don't know how young. I'm trying to decide whether to keep it or name it Stew.

Be thoughtful and answer carefully, ARFCOM. A life hangs in the balance.

let it grow
you'll know by week 18 or so

My wife, who is THE CHICKEN LADY, says it's a rooster (I mean she glanced at the picture and with no hesitation)
says the saddle feathers are pointed, not rounded and that indicates rooster.

Never heard that one before.

Looks like a buff orpington hen and a rhode island red on the right.

The guinnea hen on the left is the loudest, dumbest and most annoying bird there is.

My FIL's chicks just stopped laying because the weather got cold here.

ETA: FIL has all 3 pf those as well as some dominics and turkeys.

If the one in the middle was a Rooster, he would be significantly larger with a HUGE comb. His hens lay everyday (until last week.) They don't need a rooster to lay, but they won't be fertile unless there is one to fertilize the eggs.

If she doesn't lay right now it is because of the weather.......don't give up on her, wait until the spring

Good luck

I have had a few that I thought were hens turn out to be roosters, and the reverse is true.

What I can't figure out is why this one always growls at me. Need to turn up the volume to hear it.....RR free.

Don't look a thing like any of my purebred Buff Orpingtons.

Might be a Buff Orp/Light Brahma cross.

To sex by feathers you have to look at the very small one's on the wings. You cannot see them in the pic.

Chickens don't have vaginae or penises.

And I'd say it's a pullet. She's lacking the sickles of a male, and the saddle feathers aren't distinctly sharp enough to make me think it's a cockerel. The hackles also look rounded.

Either way, you should just wait a couple weeks for it to get a little older and have more distinct sex characteristics.

(Though the rounded feathers isn't a dead give away. Seabrites for example are all feathered the same. Crowing isn't necessarily a 100% male thing either. I've had two hens that crowed.)

I did have a Rooster fight, and win, against a fox that got into the yard. He was beat up pretty badly, but he won.
