[ARCHIVED THREAD] - High Speed Camera (Page 1 of 2)

| I may (and I stress may) have access in the near future to a high speed camera (1.4 million FPS). Obviously, the plan is to take the camera to the range. Bullets hitting steel targets have been done too many times to count. I already plan on some AR-15 and 1911 shots but probably want to concentrate on impact videos. So, ARFCOM, what would you like to see? |

2 liter coke bottle? Shook of course. And waste perfectly good Coke??? I think not. Seriously though, are you expecting something much different than a jug of water? If it is the pressure inside you want to see I might try with a bottle of Diet Coke (maybe do Coke Zero and make a new commercial for regular Coke??). I'll add it to the list of potential shots. |

things that amount to cover or impediments to bullets. auto glass, car doors, house walls, block/bricks, trees, fire hydrants, steel posts, concrete curbs, basically anything YOU might need to hide behind and want to see what a bullet does when it hits it. Can definitely so some of those... will depend on what I can get a hold of. |
|
Videos of the action cycling, especially if you can find ones that have typical jams: FTF, FTE, Stove piping, etc. I think this would be good instruction for diagnosis when someone has these kinds of problems.
If your depth of field is also long enough, trying to capture the barrel vibrations on a thin rifle barrel likewise would be instructive; as would capturing the bullet in its first few feet of flight from the rear. The latter might pick-up the yaw and initial spiral path. You might need a stretched string for a straight-line reference, however. |
|
A view with the camer being at a 1-2o'clock position looking at the shooer, it would be cool to see it at that angle and possibly the bullet leaving the barrel, not sure if 1.4 million fps is fast enough for that though
The COOLEST thing you could do, would be getting a 5.56 tracer igniting, but that would be almost impossible. |
Years back, we would shoot blocks of lead with various calibers and note the shape and depth of the projectiles damage. Was amazed at what the tiny, fast bullets would do. Left some awesome craters, while slower pistol bullets would just melt into the block with a splat. I would think this would be of interest, but the splatter would possibly be a hazard to the camera. Then, we'd remelt the blocks and do it again (may have caused dain bramage) . That little 17 Remington just drilled thru, big bores slammed the block and moved them.
Just thinking |

I'd like to see video of:
a couple slabs of ribs sandwiching some ballistic gel or something getting shot a lightweight barrel, M4 profile barrel, and M4A1 profile barrel after firing to see the difference different flash suppressors while firing at night 40mm round exiting the barrel a kaboom a lot of the things suggested have already been done on Time Warp, Mythbusters, and others. |

The only weapon I have that ever jams is a .22LR upper when it is dirty. I doubt that will show what you want. The thinnest barrel I have is a gov. profile on a Stag 2L. Distinguishing vibration from actual recoil and rifle movement might be pretty hard, but getting a bullet in the initial few feet of flight is definitely a high priority. |

How about a big piece of meat like a roast, or a turkey maybe? I also thought the pic in the ammo oracle of a bullet yawing after passing thru an orange was pretty neat. If someone tells me they are getting rid of a bad piece of meat I will grab it. Otherwise, I doubt I will spend the money on good food just to shoot it. |

Not sure about the angle, but will definitely get bullet flight out of the barrel. Camera speed will not be an issue. Can’t do tracers. Not allowed at the range without special permission (fire hazard) and the odds of being able to position the camera in the correct spot to get ignition is probably impossible. |

Just thinking Would definitely be cool to see. I don't have large blocks of lead and it would probably put the $10,000 camera (which I don't own) at too much risk. |

Plexiglass sheet. It would be cool if you could get it thick enough to stop the bullet then put the camera behind the sheet. You might get lucky enough to watch the bullet open up. Getting plexiglass thick enough for the job (and testing it) would become very expensive. If I can even get the camera I certainly will not be allowed to put it in the flight path of a bullet. |

Don't have any ballistic gel. Will definitely be using different guns but don't have all those profiles (actually, I don't have any of those). Can only fire guns at the range 1 hour after sunset. Not sure it will be dark enough. Don't have one. Would never plan to get one and certainly won't pull the trigger if I expect one. |
