Started to post this in the Religion Section, but thought it might be more appropriate here because of it's historical connotations......

While on a driving trip this weekend, I was searching for a decent radio station; stopped searching when I came acrosss a program that mentioned "Flat Earth" beiefs/policies.
Soon discovered I was listening to a religious program, not quite what I was hoping for, but decided to listen for a bit.

In a nutshell, the speaker was trying to make this point..
Christians and major church groups have always been avid supporters of science and discovery. As a matter of fact, without the support of the Church, we would still be in the Dark Ages.
Then he launched into the "Flat Earth" topic....  Saying, people in the 1400's all knew the earth was round... used Columbus as an example.
It was not until the 1820's when Washington Irving published a satire (or some such) that the FE term was ever used, and Irving used it in jest.

BUT... many people took him to be serious and mistakenly thought he had exposed the ignorance of early christian churches.
Only since the time of Irving's book have people used this ficticious teaching to discredit the church. More or less a plot to make the church look ignorant. And misinformed people are still using this  fallacy -even today- to bash christian teachings.

I found the topic to be somwhat absurd, but I will do a little searching for W. Irving's writings.

Any input?

i have hear that too, but not sure what to think because it has all been hearsay and i havnt done any real research into the topic. perhaps i should, but i see present issues as being more important, and the people attacking the church over this shit wouldnt believe it if the proof was put in front of them and would just hate it for another reason. so why bother. its like talking to liberals about obama

Understood.. especially if evidence was placed in front of the "bashers" that the Church/christians had been very progressive and blamesless.
But I also wonder if the evidence proved differently, would these speakers accept it?
Interesting..

Went to Google and tried: Washington Irving, Flat Earth.
Lots (and lots) of good reading there.
