2y ago I got married.  I 'updated' my W4 with my employer back then.  This year we had a child.  Never got around to pulling my W4 and adding the holding, didn't concern me too much.

New year need to update my holding, turns out I never hit 'save' 2y ago so I've been listed single with 0 allowances all of 2016.  Turns out I gave the freaking Obama administration a fairly nice loan over the year at 0% interest.  I mean, good news is the refund will be nice...bad news is I shouldn't have had one at all if I was on top of things like I should have been.

TLDR - Make sure you hit 'save'

Not going to do that...  We already had a trip planned to Jamacia this summer (free, points/miles takes care of all of it), and we are on schedule to pay off all debt except my car by March.  We will honestly probably just invest the refund (what the fuck! am I really that old?) and maybe take a small amount out for something fun for each of us.

I see a PVS 14 or two in your future.

I wouldn't sweat it.  At current interest rates, you're only out a few bucks anyway.  Just make sure you're good to go for this year.

Well, you're right .  But with my 401k performance this past couple years I would have been WAY ahead if it were going there!

Oh gosh...we are still such new parents that's not something that is common for us to think about!  Thanks for the reminder!!!  BTW - We *have* talked about college funds etc for our kids.  We don't have all the details worked out, but we have a pretty good plan/idea on what we will be doing for them.

My kids are going to get the same college savings plan I got.

The IQ plan. If they aren't smart enough to earn and keep an academic scholarship, then they are going to have to earn their own way through. Mommy and daddy aren't shelling out thousands so our kid can drink and party their 20's away!

I fill out a W4 paper form when I make my changes. I'll see my tax change in the next paycheck.

Our rough idea is to save for college for our kids.  But we will never tell them about it.  They will go to school and get scholarships, and grants, and loans like everyone else.  At graduation we will give them a check for the balance of their loans/education cost.  They can take that windfall of cash and pay off their loans, or invest it, or use it as a down payment on a house, those will be the 3 options available to them.

We have a computerized system.  I just failed to follow directions and hit the save button.
