Won't be worth it.

Winter mix will evaporate (both storing and usage in your gas tank) and won't work as well in the summer due to lower octane in the heat.

Literally, your savings will evaporate.

Edit: this is all amusing you put stabilizer in it!)

The fuel will only evaporate to the saturation point.  So, if it's a sealed container, that will limit the evaporative losses.  I'd just weld it shut for good measure.

6 x 5 gallons x $1 increase
To save $30?! Unbelievable!
Of all the ways to save money: brown bag it to work twice a year, and there's your 30 sheckles.

Edit: here's an even better idea

THIS is how you do it.
And if you open the door and small gas DO NOT OPERATE ANY SWITCHES.
Ever noticed electrical work around gasoline pumps?
That is 'Explosion proof' work.
If a spark ignites vapor inside the wiring, the flash will NOT exit and light off the room (and building).

Required testing can be rather exciting.
You fill the system with normal hexane set to easily ignite..
Then squib it off to ignite with a hot wire.
In an enclose full of more Noemi hexane at the 'worst' concentration for easy ignition.

The room cannot ignite.
We did it for Air Force equipment that had to be used underneath
aircraft that were fueled, and sometimes even running.

You don't want your test gear sparking anything off during maintenance or pre-flight checkouts.

The test was done to make sure no explosion would propagate.

I learned from Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia that hoarding gas is a great idea, with virtually no downsides.

Store it in your attic since the fumes are heavier than air you’ll smell the gas before it can go boom.

I have about 300 gallons in my attic right now.

I keep 2- 55 gallon drums in one shed and have 10 5 gallon cans in a garage.  As long as good and sealed I have no problem with it.  Either have a pump or a good simpli safe siphon and your set.  I'd store outside and not in basement though.

Gas prices are finally dropping below $4 a gallon in California, and since I spend around $400 or so a month on gasoline alone it really helps a lot when it's cheaper.

EDIT - ok I won't stuff it in the basement and put it in a separate shed but I still want to save some money, gas prices are gonna be $5 a gallon next year. I already have six 5 gallon gas cans as well and can buy more.

Use STEEL for petroleum storage.
Gasoline does not keep  well in plastic. the volatile fractions  gas off through the plastic pores.
6 months to a year max in warm climates. Longer in COLD storage.
500 gallon steel tanks are pretty cheap around here, add a decent pump and  DUAL filter assembly you'll end up around a grand or so.
... if you have some timbers around  for cribbing.
Don't recommend anything smaller than 500 gallons because   the evaporation rate  just goes higher  with small tanks: Surface area to  net VOLUME ratio, and also,  bigger tanks  stay cooler.

I highly doubt you can get the non ethanol gas in CA. Hording ethanol gas?

If I tried to do something like this I would get a proper overhead storage tank outside like a farmer, although I'm not certain I'd use the gas fast enough.

Remember when oil came in 5 gallon cans instead of buckets?
My dad used them for gas cans. Fortunately he kept them on a dirt barn floor and they all died of rust by 1985.

15 years ago, I found out a cousin still does that. Gas hit 1.47 in December and he filled about ten oil cans with high vapor pressure gasoline.
I thought he'd run it in his truck as prices went up, but he was saving it for the mower.
April comes along, he gets out the mower and leaves the door open.
Direct sunlight hit those cans and they puked all over the garage floor.

Octane between winter blend and summer blend is the same, it the RVP that is higher in winter blend. It has a better chance of vapor locking in the summer heat.

I was getting gas the day before a 25 cent tax increase per gallon.

Older guy approached me and asks if they sell gas cans here. I said I don't know I don't work here.

He says he hopes they do because he wants to buy a couple more 5 gallon gas cans. I said why, because of the tax increase? Yes. So you're going to spend $8 on a gas can to save $1.25 on gas??

Like flipping a light switch.

Point is, paranoia, fear, and emotion often overrule logic.

Cool?  Probably.
Safe for storage of bulk quantities of gasoline? NO.

How many gallons of gas do you see storing in this cool, safe space to make it worth the time and expense?  Have you really crunched the numbers?

A cheap 5 gallon gas can runs about 10.00
5 gallons @ 4.00 = $20.00.
Lets say you store 5 gallons @ 3.00/gallon.  This would be $15.00 plus the 10.00 for the can.  So you just spent $25.00 to buy and store the 5 gallons of 3.00 gas.  However, you did pay 1.00 less per gallon.

Hell of a savings plan you have here.
View Quote
It is all about scale... If he stores and saves 100 gallons(monthly amount used) that is only 20 gas cans, so 200 bucks on gas cans, and filling them at 300 bucks, stabil for the gas(20 bucsk for 100 gallons) so 500 bucks per month for first year, vs 500 in total gas costs per even per month saving him. saving him 180 a month in fuel costs in the first year., so factor in that he needs to have 600 gallons saved for his usage.  120 5 gallon gas cans single stacked , is like 120 square feet(i assume since you bought cheap gas cans you cant stack them).

100 gallons a month? 20mpg = 24k a year.
Try not driving so much,
(I assume 6 months of winter gas prices, i don't notice the changes since it is merely , that is only 2.60 here)

At those prices and mileage id seriously consider a civic, prius, or bicycle.

About the only way to hoard is to convert to propane and buy a lifetime supply at today’s prices.  Of course that assumes you are not spending cash on tanks/storage.

OP of you're serious about saving money on fuel and doing it safely you need to look into a farm type tank like this
https://halltank.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/overhead1-250x275.jpg
Or this
https://www.steeltankandfabricating.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/diesel-tanks-2.jpg
I had the first type when I was farming. The advantage is it's simple and gravity fed. The other one is easier to get to and can be used with manual or electric pumps.
The petroleum distributor will often lease them to you at a reasonable cost if you don't want to buy one. They can be found on the used market pretty reasonable around me, not sure about your area. You will also be able to buy the gas at a slight discount compared to the station price and it will be delivered to you.
The down side is it could be a target for thieves. A way to shield it from the road is advised.
View Quote
Trouble with gravity feeds is the slow flow.  Might be OK for a car but it takes forever to get 100+ gallons into a tractor.  Auto shut off nozzles don't work on such low pressure.

Check your homeowners insurance about how much fuel can be stored in your sheshed. Also Im sure it will violate fire ordinances in your city. Leaving you vulnerable to lawsuits if you burn down the neighborhood.
