I have been buying the odd tool from Ebay like a jackass. I picked up a Sandvik SCLCL 5/8 tool holder that was sold as new old stock missing insert screw. They even gave the missing screw part number in the description. So I make an offer and get the bid and order a made in USA screw that listed the Sandvik part number as a cross. Both arrive the same day. Damn screw doesn’t fit. The cross reference is wrong in the US screw seller’s ad. Apparently everyone uses M3.5 coarse in that size except Sandvik who appears to use M3.5 metric fine. Balls balls balls! I can buy a single screw from a German supplier for $50. That’s more than I paid for the insert tool holder. Penn Tools has them but I have to buy $70 worth of that screw. Just another example for the hobbiest,…..you don’t know what you don’t know. It’s a good thing I’m in no immediate need to use it, I was just adding the opposite hand tool for the day when I did need it that takes the same insert. At least the screws are actually correct for the Kennametal tools I picked up. |

I know two real machinists, they might be able to steer me to a Sandvik guy or maybe hook me up. The only rep I met was the Haas guy who was making a coffee/sales stop at a friend’s shop.

Another thing I may check, I was wondering if the shim retaining screw in the Sandvik is the same size and external threads as the Kennametal stuff I have. If so It’d be easier and likely cheaper to locate that part and convert it to the normal M3.5 coarse that everyone else uses. It’s a screw down with shim underneath set up so the shim screw has the female threaded hole for the insert screw. Something to do in the shop when it starts raining later. It’d be nice to keep a standard. |

Well my title is unfair to Sandvik. After figuring out how to set up an account for a mere hobbiest that doesn’t own a commercial machine shop I was finally able to see their hidden prices and specs. Only $4-5 a screw versus their German supplier price above or the Penn Tools minimum order that gets you to almost $80. So $26 for spares and a spare seat/shim screw as well direct from Sandvik. Not great, not horrible. I did have to make up an imaginary company name to register though. ETA The US Ebay seller that sold me the wrong screws as a direct cross under the Sandvik Part number seems to be surprised and in 30 years has never heard this complaint. Well we will see when the Sandvik order arrives. ETA2 Ebay screws were fine. I bought Sandvik screws and a spare shim screw. Well the new Sandvik insert screw did not fit, swapped the seat screw and tada. Dammit, new old stock ebay tool had been rat fucked of its parts and the wrong shim/seat screw was in it. Wasted time and money and lost most of the “savings” buying new old stock to have to go parts swapping. |

That is what I thought based on the shim screw’s inside threads. the M3.5x .6 was a definite no go in what I received in the NOS ebay tool. Just over half a turn with the manufacturer’s part number screw before that bind of incompatible threads.. It wouldn’t go and looked like twice as fine a thread in the hole. I presume after buying the actual sandvik part that this tool was rat fucked for spares to keep another tool running. Then someone tosses in the oddball shim screw. ETA to distill things down the correct screw WITH THE CORRECT SHIM SCREW is the coarse metric 0.6 pitch. The mystery shim screw was looking for a fine insert screw. I went to my buddy’s job shop. He had drawers of parts but not a fine M3.5 screw. Some mystery Chinese shim screw part was the booger in the ointment. |

Late to the party but I keep my Sandvik rep on speed dial LOL. He has always treated me like he treats his big customers (Mercury Marine, John Deere, etc. are some of his accounts) and replies to inquiries within hours. He has for sure given me a few samples he thought might be useful or given me peripherals or spares from his trunk, and I tend to use their lathe tooling almost exclusively because of that. They are expensive but man can their tools make you money if you run them how your rep tells you to! |
