Working on the docks I was a rigger for the delivery of 8 of these gantry cranes. Standing on a cross leg while one set of legs is on land and the others are still on the ship is pucker time..

I believe the ship in the OP is 2 generations larger than the one carrying the Cole.

That's the Blue Marlin. She's a heavy lift vessel. They submerse the ship until the deck is below water, then load up - they take offshore platforms and rigs, mostly.

They require a deepwater berth, which are mostly on the eastern side of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Blue Marlin (that ship) is small potatoes by todays standards. They are planning on shipping the Costa Concordia to India on the back of one when they take it to the scrapyard.

Very careful ballasting and avoiding storms like the plague. That picture was taken in the port where I work a few years back when the new APM Terminal got its cranes.

Ya, I stole your guys pic.. All mine are on my old phone.. Took one while standing on the crane apex while going under the Vincent Thomas bridge in the port of LA, we cleared under the bridge by 10' at low tide.

They cross the pacific from China for the cranes they delivered to us. They ship them fully assembled and standing as you can see. They go very slow, wait out storms if they have to but in reality they are fairly stable when loaded.

Though standing 220' up on the very top of a China made lowest bidder ZPMC crane on a China made ship with 4 of those 1,000 ton piles of steel swaying in the swells is one of those "if I die I die" moments

Being out at the boom tip making repairs while a crazy crane driver smashes cans into the water off the ship is a much better ride.. Also fun to stay out at the boom tip when they raise the boom for the ship... Now your 330' in the air sitting on the railings because the cat walks are now vertical.
