My wife and I are eyeing home schooling as an option for our child when she's older, but since neither of us were home schooled, I have no idea what kind of resources are out there. Anybody have any experience/knowledge on this area? What's out there that we could use to evaluate whether or not to pursue this route? _MaH |

Home School Legal Defense Association. Plus there are plenty of local organizations in Virginia. Your local Baptist/Evangelical church would probably have a good list. |
There's a lot of material out there. The easiest way is to speak with some folks who home school their children. We get all our materials at the state homeschool show they have every year in a convention center. I think this is the info for your state's convention:

Lots of folks use different programs or curriculums, but we pick and choose what fits our needs and our kids' learning styles the best. And most areas have plenty of folks and groups to help. Between Pax River and Andrews AFB there are tons of mil. folks around here who homeschool to give their kids more continuity in their educations. Read "The Well Trained Mind" and some of John Taylor Gatto's books as well. It's REALLY working out well for us, and to be honest, I had my doubts before we got started. But things are growing great and the kids are really doing well: turning into free thinking, well rounded, educated, AMERICANS! |

ABEKA books has a curriculum, Bob Jones University has an extensive curriculum including satelite channel that we use. DVD record the lessons, grade the tests, build ARs for extra credit, whatever. You still have access to the public school as well. We use tutors for music or physics and some are members of the local high school football team. The public school won't like it but you can use them a lot. After all, you did pay for an education from them as well! Check your local laws for covering your butt and you are GTG. |
