I'm sure most of you are familiar with the splatter targets that make a bright-colored splatter mark when hit. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to make these things at home. They're not cheap to buy. It can't be rocket science to put one of these things together. Any ideas?

Jimmy

While I understand the theory of operation (very slick brightly colered backing with a thin coat of easily flaking paint), I'm unsure of a way to cheaply DIY.

Not a bad guess.

Just spraypaint some wax paper w/ some flat black, and give it a try!

Get bright paper, and color over it with black crayon, make the crayon dark and thick.

It acts like a scratch off ticket, im sure with the bullet impacting it will throw surrounding crayon off.

My favorite is light blue wrapping paper, at 100 yards i can see the holes no problem, with my scope!

Find some thin plastic sheet like they use, buy a roll of it (it's probably on a huge one, several hundred feet), cut it out, spray paint it, and shoot them.

Are you painting the paper or the cardboard? I think the wax paper might just work.

put the wax paper  on the cardboard for visibility. Paint the slick side of the wax paper.

I've seen a thread about this somewhere...I think when they tried it they used Tempera paint, but can't remember the results...

I've seen a couple of homemade ones that suggested to use saran wrap instead of wax paper.

The core of the project board is usually white. You may not even need to color it black. The shots would show up in white.

How about black shelf paper over colored project board?

I like to buy cheap raspberry soda, store brand whatever.  Splatters into tiny happy shards in a fine misty red cloud.

temper paint over plastic with tea spoon of dishwahing soap per quart.

freezer paper, whit kind with "plastic" coating

spray with case lubing wax, hornady dillon etc

spray with paint, black works the best

let dry

Its not green, but it work the same.

Ive heard you can soak the paper side of the freezer paper in ink to get the color you want

YMMV
