I'm pretty sure that tankless electrics universally suck unless you have lots of juice, and want to provide hot water for a sink.

No.   Just no.  Gas or nothing with a tankless system.

Why do you assume that you need a new water heater?  Maybe it is a heating element or thermostat.  I just replaced all of mine a few months ago.

I had to figure out how to fix mine without this websites help when I said "Hot water heater" in the thread title a few years ago. Savage.

Just stay with a tank. Definitely don't do electric. For that amount of water for an electric tankless is going to require something like
3 - 60 amp double pole breaker

I've been using an electric tankless for over 10 years and love it.  It's perfect for me and my house.  The water line to my house isn't super deep either, not shallow enough to ever freeze, but in the middle of Winter the water coming into my house can be as low as 37 degrees, and my Stiebel Eltron Tempra Plus heats it up as hot as I want instantly.

Because if you don't, it doesn't stay hot.

So, why do you need to heat your hot water?

How do you know that your current water heater cannot be repaired?

Listing calls for dedicated 150 amp service. You may have to up your main service.

I looked at electric when I decided to dump my electric tanked.

After cost comparisons between electric and propane (no NG here), the electric tankless would have taken two dedicated 220 breakers, and the monthly electrical cost would have been very close to what I'm paying for my tanked hot water heater.

I went with a Rinnai RL94iP which is 199,000 btu propane and makes it easy for me since it uses a 1/2" propane line which I already set up for stove and dryer.

Even with the $250 rebate from the electric co. I use, the cost of a propane tankless is cheaper.

Tankless electrics are usually regarded very highly...provided you have a sufficient power and space in your electric panel.

I had a thread going a month ago about the same thing, and the replies were very helpful.

There is a reason that old style hot water tanks are by far the most common system; it is because they are the least cost solution.

I have the ecosmart 27, I had a problem with my kitchen faucet, being some "low flow" crap, the flow rate was too low and would make the lights in the house strobe.
I contacted ecosmart and they sent me a different version of modulator and that fixed the strobing lights.
so far it has been working well.

I bought mine from Amazon, they are much cheaper there.

I dug up your thread and it was helpful.

I really liked the idea of using your old water heater (with no power to it) as basically a mixing tank for the incoming water. In the winter the water will warm slightly too. That's a great idea.

Here's Blake's thread for anyone interested.
