..and the MOTHERFUCKING A/C just went out!
Shit! The fan motor on the compressor unit just seized up. I turned all the window units upstairs on high, but there is no unit in here (my office). It will be getting HOT in here soon. The wife is on the phone to the A/C guy. Frankly, at 8:00PM on a Saturday night, she is wasting her time. |

| If you can reach the fan, just give it a little spin. I've seen more than one electric motor fixed (temporarily) just by being spun free. Junk build up over time and eventually the armature seizes. Tapping the outside of the motor or just turning the inside can have it up and running again. |

It's a motor. Sure, I could do it...but I will hire a pro. He will know where to get the motor, I might luck out and he will have one in stock. Otherwise, it will be Monday. Which means I would have to take off work to do it. And burn a PTO day. Plus, I want him to check the refrigerant, I think it needs a shot.

My A/C unit quit working last summer. Turned out it was only a capacitor which drove the fan that went bad. $30 & about 3 hours later, I was off and running again. Fixed it myself. The cap looked like it was bulged out on the bottom.
It has been miserable today though. I know how you feel. Best of luck in a speedy fix. |

You can get one locally, look up electric motors in the phone book. You probably just need to replace the capacitor. They pop in this heat. $10 fix. Might require a screw driver. |

Not the start capacitor, it was running when it seized up. Maybe the run capacitor, if it has one. |

I spent 9+ years in PHX its not hot till 120+ AMEN brother.... I've living that right now.. Back to the OP.... I would agree with your about wasting PTO, but that again I guess it's what a day of PTO is worth $$, which to me is A LOT! I live on the other side of the State...on the Colorado River. About 100 miles south of Las Vegas. It's HOT here...usually the hottest livable spot in the USA. Old desert trick, paleface Cheers... |

Mine quit last weekend like that,,, I took the fan motor off and popped the little small cover off of the end of the motor,,,, opposite end of fan blade,,, so I could get to the shaft, put some motor oil on the shaft and got it to spinning freely and put it back on.. It worked for another week.. I completely forgot about it through the week. last night it went out again,,so I am in the same boat you are in, this time it is gone for good. Luckly I have some window units, but it is still hot in here.. |

Wet your linens and have a ceiling fan blowing down on your... you will be cool.... (coming from AZ) |

If it's bulged, it's shot. Do this before you pay someone. Every A/C repairman in America is replacing 5 of these a day right now. |

Quoted: Yup. Here we roast in the summer and freeze our asses in the winter. Fuck you dry heat / dry cold people. I've worn shorts in 28° in Wyoming and didn't feel that bad. Shorts in 28° here means my nuts freeze and shatter against each other.Quoted: Quoted: I spent 9+ years in PHX its not hot till 120+ Really? When is it cold? -30 duh!1 Come to Oklahoma. Its been upper 90's and super high humidity. I garantee its been freakin hot. |
