So long story short... I have a half brother I met when I was a kid...I was Maybe 8-9 years old... (I'm 37 now).
My dad was married for a few months, had a kid, they split up, she took the kid(my half brother). Dad didn't see him again until he was a teen, I was a 8-9 y/o when he came to visit. We had steady contact with him after his visit but my Dad was an alcoholic asshole and destroyed any possibility of a relationship between him and my half and all contact ceased. Was watching a show on family members finding each other after years... So I said what the fuck and started googling... And I found him on Facebook. I'm torn... I'm debating even contacting him... But if I do... What the fuck would I say to start the conversation? I know this is GD and all... But I need some legit opinions. UPDATE So I sent a message "Hey what's up man..? So... Im pretty sure you're my half brother. It's been a long, long time... Was wondering if you wanted to talk. If not, no worries... I'd understand." I sent that last Saturday and didn't hear anything back... But it didn't say it went through... So I had some Jameson the other night and sent a friend request through... It was accepted tonight and I got this response a little bit ago. "Wow!!!! I don't accept friend requests from people I don't recognize... I accepted yours on the off-hand chance that you are who I hoped. I am looking forward to getting to know you. Please call or text me when you have time.(---) ***-****" |

Sent my half brother a letter, no answer. Sent my half brother a thumb drive with a video of me introducing myself, no answer. OP, if I got a letter, card, video, etc contact from my half brother I would be fired up. He apparently does not feel the same. Please be prepared for that type of similar result. Once you are prepared for possible rejection, try to make contact, "Hello, I am your half brother" is a good starting place. I would/did try with simple not terribly invasive, Hi this is who I am would like to talk if you are up to it type stuff. I wouldn't go to deep at first. Let him process it, but like I said, no guarranttee's. Best of luck. Lug1 |

So I sent a message

Similar situation happened to me. But with a half sister I never knew about. We met on facebook, then in person once or twice. Was uncomfortable- I love my dad, she hates him for never being part of her life. While I understand what she feels is not unusual, I still care more for my dad.
Wish I'd never opened that can of worms. Now we just don't talk ever. |
