It's kinda like a Zippo. You fill it with lighter fluid. Then, when you want to use it, you unscrew the "match". Striking it on the bar on the side creates sparks igniting the lighter fluid soaked into the "match". They work pretty good; but, the lighter fluid has a tendency to evaporate out of them over time.
