| Do they just wander until they see a living person? So is it a sight thing? Or do they actually smell your brains? Or is it that you don't smell like rotting flesh? Or do they sense your heartbeat? |

They seem to be able to tell the difference between living and dead folks by smell. Their sight is reportedly the same as when they were alive but its still unknown how the brain interprets the signals. Some speculation to them having night vision because of their excellent night hunting skills but even the Zombies with no eyes are excellent hunters. |

So why do *I* need glasses and zombies can develop night vision? Maybe Oprah or Dr. Phil will do a show about it soon. |

Smell is a suggested sense in some of the training films and books, but sound seems to be the main sense. Oddly, I don't recall much noise discipline being practiced or suppressors being used on firearms. Well no...in a glorious orgy of zombie killing goodness you wanna make some noise man!

according to the zombie survival guide they have night vision and acute hearing. The book also prescribes silencers do to that. That's right, in the part about the downed pilot, her survival weapon was suppressed.I'd forgotten that part. To respond to the other point, if they already know I'm there, I'm sure as hell going to make a lot of noise. In fact, it might be an advantage in certain situations.Your team or other survivors could locate you if your communications were down. You could also use noise to lure Z's away, or into a chokepoint.

damn...
for sight: that's not too hard. for sound: I guess rigging a speaker in a shanty surrounded by a dry moat about 50yds away could work. for smell: ...how the hell do you hide the smell of something encased within bone, muscle, and skin? Or do they smell the non-rotting flesh? |

Or do they smell the non-rotting flesh? C. Smell Unlike with sound, the undead have a more acute sense of smell. In both combat situations and laboratory tests, they have been able to distinguish the smell of living prey above all others. In many cases, and given ideal wind conditions, zombies have been known to smell fresh corpses from distances of more than a mile. Again, this does not mean that ghouls have a greater sense of smell than humans, simply that they rely on it more. it is not known exactly what particular secretion signals the presence of prey: sweat, pheromones, blood, etc. In the past people attempted to "mask" their human scent with perfumes, deoderants, or other strong-smelling chemicals. None were successfull. Experiments are now under way to synthesize the smells of living creatures as a decoy or even repellent to the walking dead. A successful product is still years away from "The Zombie Survival Guide" Max Brooks |

I wonder if amonia or bleach in open containers would help mask it? Worked for Will Smith, right? For those of you into graphic novels, there was one done before 28 weeks later. It suggested that smell was one of the ways that zombies track prey. It can be foundhere... |

Are you saying it is based in the 28 days/weeks story line? If so... Doublefail train! Again not zombies. Those are ragers, infected humans who will die from a normal non-head trauma no problem. |

.
Maybe they are attracted to the humidity or CO2 in your exhaled breath. Something in perspiration. The electric field generated by living nervous systems. Maybe we radiate brain waves on a frequency they can detect. No telling what changes in a postmortem body are made when it reanimates. It might detect things the living can't. Could be anything. |

Sorry. I'm a sunny pessimist. I'm assuming the worst case scenario––runners that require headshots. That said, attributes of Rage are similar to assumptions around Solanum. Both sources suggest smell is a major factor. |

After watching that, I'd pray for zombies or vampires... |

You guys need to look up the booklet that was handed out to the extras and doubles that were to play as zombies on the Resident Evil series. The director hit a home run with how the zombies acted in those movies, if you watch the special features on 2 I am pretty sure there is a zombie training course and excerpts from the "Book of the Dead" which was the training manual that explains why and how the zombies act.
The way that they can sense or hunt the living is because they are always drawn by the life force that the living give off, and that they are not eating to sustain but that is the closest way to be with that life force is to eat them. I am not sure where the book of the dead is but I did read it a while ago from some link on google. |

I haven't seen the booklet in question on any website. Do you have a URL? |
