Does it work on the causes of allergies or symptoms?
Spring has been killing me on the golf course. Some days (not all) I'll take a Claritin and be fine all day but how does it work if you're already having symptoms? Should it stop sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat after it's taken? |
Loratadine antagonizes peripheral histamine receptors. Basically it jacks them up so they don't make you feel as bad.  I don't really consider it to be a good antihistamine though as it lacks decongestant properties you get from other kinds of antihistamines. Unless of course you go for the Claratin D, which contains pseudoephedrine.

I've never had much luck with anything working real well once it's game on, to be honest. The split second I feel my nose so much as tingle, I grab one, or I'm miserable. I've taken more of a liking to Zirtec in the past few years, though. |

Loratadine was kind of a disappointment as far as antihistamines are concerned. People wanted to develop something which wouldn't cross the blood brain barrier or make people drowsy, but would still provide some level of relief. They mostly got the first two right, but didn't really develop a drug that is highly effective at preventing allergy symptoms. It mostly only provides low to moderate relief throughout a day. If you need more allergy relief you need to take another kind of allergy medication in addition to the loratadine. My personal favorite is Chlorphenamine because it dries up snot. Claratin D works too as it contains pseudoephedrine along with the loratadine.
