When you are carrying concealed how much ammo is enough?  Weigh out comfort/concealment factors as well.  I used to carry a Glock 23 (in an owb serpa holster), an extra mag, a surefire, a pair of cuffs, a leatherman, and a cell phone all on my belt...it got to be a little much so I trimed down to: a Glock 23(IWB blade tech holster), cuffs (not in case over rear belt loop), a Streamlight Microstream ( in pocket), a small SOG tool, and a cell phone.  I usually don't carry an extra mag....I figure that 14 rounds should be enogh for anything I run into on a RDO.

In winter time I usually carry 62 rounds.  55 for my 92FS and 7 for my P3AT.

I just bought an XDm 9... So 20 rounds for me.

I never carry an extra mag, Im sure I will catch flak from the hive here, but its just not easily comfortable for me. Im a small guy and it gets tough to hide all this stuff.
2/15/2009 9:35:11 AM EDT
[#3]
I carry 45 rounds of  9mm, one 15 round magazine in the pistol, two spare 15 round magazines in my back pocket or on my belt

One magazine in the firearm  is plenty . I am not going into combat.

The extra mag is more likely to be needed in case of a failure, not for the extra rounds. If your mag fails you are stuck.

I try to get to the range at least once evey 2 weeks....I also rotate my magazines every month or 2 sooo I don't think magazine failure is too big of a concern for me with the above precautions.

I hardly ever take a extra mag with me if I do its just one. I have them in  the car.  I dont see how people carry all this shit, cell phone, ccw, 2 extra mags, knife, flashlight etc..  Thats getting crazy unless your a cop.

The answer you seek depends on how far away from your rifle you are at the time. A handgun is just to fight your way to your rifle.

No kidding WTF . I think a lot of the time it is BS. Wanting to appear bad ass there is a little  ( ok a lot) embellishment

6+1 in the Kahr PM9 + 2 extra mags with 7 rounds each.

I am a cop....but when I'm "off duty" I try and be OFF DUTY....but there is always that duty to act thing but I will not put my family at risk...their safety is number one...I carry just in case I come across a violent felony in progress kinda thing where I need to protect myself, my family, or general public.....I also live in the same town where I work and often I come across people that I have arrested in the past....I'm not to worried usually but just in case....

15in the G19, and 15 in the spare mag.

For the 1911, I carry 9 in the gun and another 2 mags of 8, for a total of 25.

So, 25 for th my 1911, and 30 fo my Glock.

49 pre 9-11 I only carried the 13 in the 229, but I used to think no one would ever be able to launch a successful air attack on the USA

Under optimum conditions, I like to carry two spare mags.

In very hot summer weather, where concealment becomes more problematic than in winter, I will sometimes have just one spare mag or perhaps none at all, but I always like to have at least one spare mag for a jam/failure recovery drill in an emergency, if for no other reason.

The CCW is to get me  out of there / keep me safe , not to engage in mortal combat. Self defense  not offense.
That is how I see it anyway

I consider my cel phone to be every bit as essential a piece of emergency equipment as a firearm, and in some cases, even moreso.  It would be kind of crazy to obtain a CHL and carry a weapon, but not carry a cel phone along with it IMHO.

One speed strip with 6 extra .357 rounds.

This threads BS level would fit in well with the "Engage Mall shooter at 100yds" thread.

What do you think defending yourself with a deadly weapon IS?

2/15/2009 10:10:43 AM EDT

3 -16 round magazines one on the weapon two in the belt. You carry enough to get you to win a firefight, not to run out of bullets begging for your life.

Extra mags doesn't always mean more rounds for more bad guys. Most will carry extra mags for when MURPHY shows up. Double feeds, or any malfunction. You do not want to keep inserting the same mag that is giving you problems in a gun fight. Also if you get a double feed, you'll need a third hand to hold the mag or take that extra second to put it in a pocket, clear your handgun. Reload, then get back in the fight. Better to let that mag hit the floor and go for a fresh mag with a full round count.

YMMV

True....and if you get into a shooting remember that 911 is recorded and can make for very good evidence in your defense if necessary.

I agree with the cell phone, but I also agree with the point of the 2 extra mags, knife, flashlight, pepper spray, body armor, fencing helmet people.  They have a right to carry all of that stuff, but it's not for me.  More than likely, my encounter is going to be with a crackhead with a knife or a Raven .32.  My 7 to 15 rds (depending on the gun I'm carrying) should hopefully be enough to give me an advantage in that situation, and the ability to remove myself from danger.  While not carrying a bunch of extra gear will put me at a disadvantage against the North Hollywood gunmen/Al Qaeda terrorist squad, I have to draw a line at some point.

While I tend to follow the "better judged by 12 than carried by 6" philosophy, I also follow the, "better not charged at all/acquitted by 12, than go to prison" philosophy.  I personally believe that carrying a whole lot of ammo, knives, lights, etc would present an attorney an argument to present to a judge or jury that I was itching for a fight.  I believe this to be the case, and feel a bit more comfortable (both physically and legally) covered if I don't carry a lot of extras.

I have 8 rounds in my primary carry, another 24 rounds in my 3 spare mag's, 5 rounds in my bug, and another 5 rounds in a speed strip.

So 42 is my magic number.

Typically, 15+1 in the gun and two extra mags.  I figure it's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it.

46 rounds.  Loaded pistol and 2 spare mags.

3 x 15 in the mags, + 1 in the pipe.
2/15/2009 10:48:10 AM EDT
[#35]
9+1 in the gun

2 spare mags (9 rds each) = 28rds of 180gr Gold Do 10mm Goodness in 3 mags.

Good enough for me.

Oh, and a surefire 6P, gotta be able to see...
2/15/2009 10:54:10 AM EDT
[#36]
57 rounds

15+1 in the gun

2x15 in extra mags

5 in the j-frame

6 in a speed strip

I guess I need two more 15 round mags to get it right.

Most of you sound like you carry as much as I do on duty....I carry a Glock 22, 2 mags (15rds ea.), a surefire light, 2 pairs cuffs, pepper spray, an ASP batton, Taser, radio, latex gloves on my duty belt....a knife in my pocket....body armor....a Glock 27 backup, all on my person.  ANd in my unit I have a Bushmaster 16" carbine (5.56mm), with an active shooter rig that has 6 extra Pmags(30rnds), a Remington 870 12ga. (with 6 rnds OO buck on side saddle and 5rnds slug on butt cuff, a bean bag shotgun (old 870), 4 extra Glock 22 mags. a coupleof straegically placed knives....etc.
2/15/2009 1:37:11 PM EDT

I only need one bullet.

I never said not to carry a cell phone. Everyone does. I just piled it in there to show how much crap some of these people say their carrying.

I carry one double-stack .40 and an extra mag only when I go into town.

My rifle is always in the truck. The truck is always with me.

If I need more than two magazines I already have my rifle so I'm good to go.

You forgot the Zippo. If I'm beating a hasty retreat (is there any other kind?) and I can make it to the tree line I might be able to set a backfire and gain some distance ( a la Cornel Wilde in The Naked Prey).

J frame with a couple of speed strips

Hi Power with two extra mags ('cause I got the 2 mag holder, might as well fill it up.).
