Since I am a newbie and not all that familiar with the history of .223 ammo prices, more familier with C& R rifles and ammo, how much lower do you all think proces will go down?  For what I am looking at for 500 rds, I am seeing prices range 180 to about 220.  Percent wise, how much lower??  I am not buying steel case ammo.   I just would hate to buy 500 now only to have prices drop 25-30% in next couple of months.  Thanks.

I could have sworn I had already put up a reply, but don't see it, so here I go again.  I do have some rounds for my new AR, just not as much as I would like, just been buying a box here and there until I get enough to start buying in bulk, I have about 100 now, will continue to get more slowly as I find some.  Hopefully here in next month or two I am going to start buying the PRVI M193 I believe.  I am considering steel now, but still a little concerned about the effects of the residue and other problems you hear about with steel cases.  (And yes Zhukov, I did see and read the FAQ about steel cases, very informative.  That is why I am now consedering it for plinking a few hundred round. )

I think my post on this still stands.

Having a hundred or so rounds for a new rifle that you have not shot is, to me, still like having no ammo.
I would still buy the 500 rnds now, more if I could afford it.
Unless you are just going to sit on it and not shoot the rifle, you are going to eventually have to buy more.
If the price goes down, you will be buying at the lower price and you can use dollar cost averaging to bring your price down.
If the price goes up, you can be one of the 'Remember when ammo was $XXX ? people.

Nothing wrong with steel cased ammo in most rifles. I shoot lots of it in my rifles, no problems.

However, I am a big believer in zeroing/practicing with my main/stash ammo.

ETA: apologies if you have already shot your new rifle, your posts did not make it clear.
Also, congrats on your purchase and welcome to BRD.

The only thing keeping me from buying as much as 500 or 1000 is the money, I am just stuck with a few unexpected bills my wife didn't tell me about.  I plan on shooting this weekend if I am able to get there due to weather, suppose to rain for next few days and I still have to find this place that is open to the public for free.  I had to get a rear site last night so that I can shot as mine just came with front site and flat top.  Part of the problem I have had with shooting is that I am fairly new to this area and didn't know anyone who I could go to their land to shot and refused to join the POS club here that is a joke, but I have recently met a couple of people I can shot on their land and found this other nearby range.

Ever heard the old addage about a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? Addage means: buy.

Pretty much going to start as soon as I can, with what I can afford.

Thats a major concern for some of us.

Please do not not go into debt to buy ammo. (Trust me on this one)
Never a good idea.

Sounds like you have things under control.

I don't think the economy is going to be going up any time soon...consumer confidence is going to plummet come Christmas.  I expect prices to decrease by at least 10% once dealers figure out that ammo that is just sitting on the shelves is not making them any profits.

I expect ammo prices to fall, but I don’t know how much or over what period of time.  Ammo is starting to stack up everywhere.

You have dealers that have ammo on their shelves? Most of the dealers in this area are still pretty bare.

town I live in the best and about only place to get ammo is Wally world.  Only two other places and they are sky high.  I am wanting to buy 500 quick, but don't want to get caught like I did with my last AK 39 purchase, dropped like $30/500 2 months later.  Just hate having a new AR and not enough ammo to fill a few mags.

The problem is nobody knows what the future holds.

There was and continues to be a lot of speculation on the reason ammo prices have risen so much over the last couple of years.
panic buying - supply/demand - gouging - capitalism - government conspiracy -  take your pick.

If you need 500 rnds and can afford it, buy it.
If you are just looking to buy some to stash away and be able to tell people: look at the great deal I got.....  then you probably have about a 50/50 chance either way.
I mean, it's either going to go up or down in the future.

Me, if I had a rifle with no ammo, I would buy some no matter the price, as a rifle without ammo makes a fairly bad club.
Especially if you don't even have ammo to take it out to shoot it.
I have no safe queens at my house.

(ETA: Not even my c.1919 U.S. marked M1911.)

Agreed. I'd get Silver Bear for plinking and PRVI for SHTF at very least. Sure, it might go down...I paid $430 for 1k of PRVI at the beginning of summer (to go along with my first AR purchase), and now you can get that for about $330. Meh, whatever...I got to use the AR and I have 500 left over for whatever.

Just get some ammo so you have *something*, then worry about prices going up/down later.

viewing what the commodities market is doing I would say if anything ammo will be going up again soon.  At least the stuff to make rounds with will be going up in price I think.

ok, so I am going to buy 100 rds tomorrow , thought I would get the cheaper stuff.    Found out the place has the Wolf Classic in camo box for 37.50 per 100, also has PMC for 45 or Winchester 5.56 (guessing that would be the Q3131A1) for 50.  For 100 rds, what would you all take considering price, this is mainly just for plincking and first time out with my new AR.
