I have a 3x9x40 I am thinking of putting on it , but a buddy says that is to much scope for a 22.

So Arfcom what would you recomend for a .22?

If you already have a 3-9x40, use it. It's not too much scope for a general purpose plinker.  There are hardcore 22 guys out there who are using fixed 10 or 20 power scopes on their rifles.

I have a 3-9x50 on my Ruger 10/22.
Realistically it's probably too much scope, but I had it laying around, and I like it.  It is like a rifle scope and spotting scope all in one!

Are you going to use that rig for hunting grizzleys over a mile away or rats at 50 yds?

3-9X40 would be fine.  I would get a good one.
I have a 3-9X50 Leupold on mt 10-22.  It does great but is probably more than I need.
A 2-7 would maybe be perfect.

I have a fixed 3x but I've used a 3x9, works for me.

I use a Mueller APV 4.5–14×40 AO on my CZ 452.

i think it also depends on your rife.. I have a fixed 10x j.uterl scope on my baby (remington 40-x) on my henry, no scope that is just wrong.

My 10-22 has a 6.5-20 Leupold on it.  Great for making head shots on Chipmunks at 50+ yards.

Simmons 1.5-5 x 20 on my AR

Paper targets only . Fun for me and a side order of teaching the son to shoot .

Yea I know irons first and all that .

A four power scope is the highest I would ever go on a .22...

Looks like the answers are all over the board.  I shoot paper targets.  My gun has a 2-7x32 and I stick to the 4x pretty much exclusively, except when I race my friend on the 25y silhouettes, then it's 2x.

Edit for bad grammar

Good for you! My son and I just mounted a Bushnell Sportview 3-9 on our 10/22 last night. I also let him use the irons for the past three years. Now he gets to use a scope. Range report coming in a few weeks.

Whatever scope I have left over goes on my bolt action .22 (Marlin).

I just bought a used CZ513 and put on a 3-9x32mm Bushnell (from Natchez SS) on it with some Leupold rings from Wal-Mart(cost me $45+$12 for the rings).

I had a chance to sight it in a little while back- deadly to shotgun hulls at 50 yards. I'd shoot it more if it wasn't so damn cold out (-10 right now in the middle of the day; where's the global warming you promised me Al Gore!?!)

I've got a Simmons 4-12x44mm scope on my Ruger 77/22.

It is an air-rifle scope.

I typically use it for precision shots at less than 30 yards.
The adjustable objective allows me to focus much closer than that.

It allows me to aim for eyeballs on varmints, rather than just a general headshot.

(typically aim in the center of the triangle made by the two eyes and nose)

The larger objective lens is also very beneficial at dusk, as it gathers more
light than your eye, so you can see better through the scope than you can unaided.

I just purchased three of Simmon's new 4-12x40 Side Focus scopes for other rimfire rifles.

Side focus is easier to adjust while looking through the scope.

Run a fixed 4x on my 10/22.  Its all the scope I want or need.

I would be most concerned about the weight/size. It bugs me having a top heavy 4 pound .22 rifle.

+1, I do the same thing on my Marlin.  It gets whatever is the best of the left-overs.  This summer when I replace the scope on my 30-06, my 22 will be getting a 3-9X50.

Let Uncle Woody muddy the waters some...

I have a 0 power red dot on one, a fixed 4x scope on one, a 3-9 on one, and a fixed 36x on one.

I have a tricked out 10/22 that may very well be more accurate at 100 yards than most center fire rifles.
It has a Leupold 6.5-20x40 on it.

My daughter likes to shoot old shotgun shells at 100 yards with it. She almost NEVER missed with CCI Green Tag. She thinks it is about right.

Good Luck

Well, mine is a bit of overkill

BSA Contender 6-24X40 AO.

I wanted a silver scope to match the rest of the build, I wanted an AO and I didn't want to spend 3 or 400 bucks on one so that pretty much left only the BSA.

i dont think you can ever have TOO MUCH scope on a 22lr

for a while i had an $700 custom 8.5-25 loupold vx3 on a $300 ruger 10/22-t.
God that was a sweet combination. i was shooting twigs off trees at 100 yards with that thing.

If a 4X is OK, then a 3-9X can't be too much...just keep it on the low end of the magnification if you think 9X is too much.

I have a fixed 4X on my Thomson Center .22 Classic semiauto.
