Title was meant to be funny....age old workout (lifting question)

Anyways, how long does it take to fully recover from a rotator cuff injury? Damn thing still bothers me after almost 2 1/2 months since I messed it up. It has gotten better but still no where near 100%. I have rested it for a couple weeks at a time, had it "worked on" through medical message 3 times and still....damn thing is aggravating....

So, the answer to "Do you even lift bro?" is no.  Got it.

My dad messed up with rotator cuff a few years ago.  Tried rest, ice, advil, cortisone shots, the works.  He ended up having surgery.  With the surgery, it still took a couple months (6 maybe) until he was back up to speed.

That's what I'm afraid of. It seems to be getting better every week but still just seems to not heal fully. And yes , I do lift.

I've torn my rotator cuff twice, neither time required surgery.  It took a solid year before my shoulder stopped hurting and my workouts felt okay again.  It took years to build my strength back up to where it was, and even then I doubt I will ever hit that level again.  The first time I tore it, I lost 80% of my strength on my right side.

I have had two shoulder surgeries and will be in need of a shoulder replacement in the not too distant future.

My shoulder Dr. said that bench pressing over 95 pounds is just showing off. I asked for clarification for me and my bad shoulder or for everybody, he said for everybody.

His contention is that the bench press is not a natural movement in your everyday life. He said think about it there are only two times that you do bench press type movemnets, push ups and bench press. The stresses that are put on the shoulder are not good, and that 95 pounds a bunch of times is way better than 200+ pounds 10-15 times, that 200+ pounds messes up your shoulder.

Dr. did the medical school thing, then orthapedic fellowship school whatever that is, then shoulder fellowship, he does shoulders and the occasional elbow.

The most that I have beched since my surgery is 135, becasue I was too lazy to take the 45 pound plates off and put on 25's, another guy was using the 45's.

When i tore mine the doctor recommended surgery which i refused. Constant pain for about 3-years then it stopped hurting. I'm stronger than ever before now when it comes to pull ups and bench, but my shoulders are weak. The injured shoulder has developed completely different from the other. looks pretty weird.

Your doc should hang out with me. Pushing stalled cars out of the roadway, pushing open doors that some asbergers rage boy is trying to hold closed, pushing away drunks that posture up. Bench with heavy weights helps with my every day activities.

Just go to the supplement store and buy one of everything.  Take it when you get home and you'll probably be better in a few days.  Probably.   You can further decrease recovery time if you wear an Affliction shirt under a Tapout shirt for the next 48 hours and anytime you're at the gym or in public..

I've hurt mine a few times but never tore it.  I was told to avoid overhead lifts until it feels 100% and also rehab it.  Google rotator cuff physical therapy and there will be some good movements you can do to help strengthen the small muscles in your shoulder which will reduce pain and help you get stronger.  Good luck.

How long does it take?

If it's minor, it takes until the PT gets it better.   It WILL NOT get all the way better without PT.  Normal weightlifting movements ARE NOT PT for rotator cuff, you need to do RT-specific exercises.

if it's more than minor, it won't get better until after surgery and PT.  Things like detached tendons don't get better otherwise.

IMHO, much better than avoiding the movement is to do shoulder-specific, and especially RT-specific exercise to strengthen it and prevent injury.

Your doctor is wrong. The bench press trains pushing movements, one of six primal motor movements that all movement is based around.

Shoulder problems from bench pressing usually stem from improper form - especially flaring the elbows out. This takes pressure off of the triceps and places too much of the work onto the shoulder. This is how probably 90 percent of people that lift weights for extended periods of time arrive at a shoulder injury.

I actually brought up pushing a dresser (we had just moved) and he said, similar but not the same, you do not push when your back is flat/straight, you tend to always lean into it. His theory is do excercises that mimic real life and do not use heavy weights do more reps with lower weights.

Left shoulder took two years after surgery to be right again.  Right shoulder has been six years after surgery and it still isn't good, I doubt it every will beat this stage.
