Hypothetically speaking, say you had a couple of teenagers in your house and you wanted to know what websites they visit, who they talk to online, what they e-mail, what kind of instant messages are going back and forth. Is there a program that would let you do that without them knowing?

Just tell your router to log their Mac address

Set up another PC with a remote connection, and just monitor what they are doing.   Most users wouldn't even know if someone else was logged on their PC while they are using it.  I do this at work from time to time to monitor some of my employees PC usage.  I only have had to do this a few times when something was suspicious.  Found nothing to be wrong, but it's nice to be sure.  I have remote access set up for all 25 PC workstations at work.  Usually, I just use it to troubleshoot problems without walking to the other side of my plant.

A good packet sniffer can not only tell you where they go but will also show you everything every instant message contains.
