| New guy checking in. What is the general rule of thumb for stabilization of a cigar in a controlled environment like a humidor, etc.? Thanks. |

Quoted:
What temp and humidity level? 65/65. If you are asking what to use, well, that's like asking beans/no beans and 9/45.
I use silica kitty litter, for what it's worth. My apologies. I should have given a better explanation. I picked up a Davidoff Nicuraguan Toro, a La Gloria Cubana Series R, a New World Navagante Robusto, and an A Fuente Gran Reserva for my first "sampler" the other day. I do not have a humidor yet but I am planning on getting beads or some Boveda packs and build a coolerador. In the meantime, I thought I may store them in a jar. I have access to multiple Temperature/Humidity chambers at work and I thought that I could possibly stabilize the cigars at 65/65 before placing in the jar and was looking for some insight on how long i should keep them in the chamber in order for the cigar to acclimate. |

Well, it's important to know what the cigars starting RH is and where you are trying to get them. But generally 2 weeks is long enough to stabilize a store bought/ordered cigar since its RH should be relatively close to where you want to end up anyways. Most retailers and distributors will store their cigars higher than what I (and most people) would recommend smoking at. Often times this is to account for humidity lost during shipping or when someone purchases a cigar they intend to smoke later in the week. Edit: For short term storage while you are setting up a new humidor/winador/coolador. Use a tupperware container, take a paper towel, dampen it and then squeeze out all the water you can so it feels moist but doesn't leave water behind. Put it in the tupperware with your cigars and redampen/squeeze out moisture every 24-48 hours. |
