What is the general consensus of him on Arfcomm????????? I ask only since I watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It was a hilarious movie. |
I'm not into drugs, but I can't help but love that quote. |
|
Drugged out nutcase , liberal douche bag writing stream-of-conscious garbage. Occasionally he could turn an interesting phrase. My question is, how could a drugged out loser own so many NFA weapons ? And , what kind of scumbag shoots himself in his own home (kitchen) he shares with his family , thereby ensuring it is his family that finds him ? Would any of you HST fans do that to your own wife and son ? |
Habitual drug use and drunk driving and written advocacy of same. Reckless and criminal use of his beloved firearms and he ALWAYS supported gun control politicians to name a few. He had dozens of arrests and would have had more if he wasn't protected by the corrupt Sheriff of Pitkin County, his friend. |

The book is better. Hells Angels is good, as is The Curse of Lono is funny. He peaked in the 70's. Some very good writing at times. "And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." |
didn't hemingway do something like that as well? great artistic types are always over the top and by normal standards often wicked, it doesn't make them any less interesting. -patry |
I don't agree with it, but I do understand. He was very sick and wanted control. It was a fitting death for him based on his personal and political views. |
|
I don't quite get the indignation and offense at him killing himself. He led a long enough and certainly extraordinary life, did a lot of new things and was loved and respected by a lot of people. If he chose to end his life the way he lived it - on his own terms - I don't see a reason to be upset. That kind of absolute individualism is quite a specimen of freedom, and he was a truly free man who went out exercising his second amendment rights. |
It's the drugs! They are evil! It's for the children! |
People who get all upset about suicide usually are Religious and god fearing folks, mind set being it's not your life. |
|
He was a freak. He was also an absolute lover of freedom. Read his book "Better than Sex: On the Campaign Trail". There were two presidents that he both respected and hated with everything in him: Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. To him, they were the Head Swine; purely political machines with no other purpose than to grab power for themselves. "You can turn your back on a person, but you can never turn your back on a drug. Particularly when it's waving a razor sharp hunting knife in your face.." |
