What is the general consensus of him on Arfcomm?????????
I ask only since I watched
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It was a hilarious movie.

His writing is stuff of legends..

I cannot speak for ARFCOM, but personally I think he was a drugged out nutcase. YMMV.

I've read most of his stuff.  He was a pretty cool dude.  He was also a dirty fucking hippie.  He loved guns.  He loved dope.

It's plusses and minuses.

I enjoyed lots of his stuff, but....  basically a liberal cocksucker.

Awful writing. I'd rather read the U S Tax Code than any more of his work.

Fear and Loathing was a great movie.

and, yes, he was a drugged out nutcase.

By the way, this was a good quote of his: "I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone... but they've always worked for me"

[#7]
When he committed suicide he was cremated and his ashes were shot out a cannon as per his request.  Any questions?
1/10/2008 7:22:51 PM EDT
[#8]
I dont know much about him, but he seems like an "interesting" guy from what I have gathered.

[#9]
He was a cool guy, just really strange.
1/10/2008 7:26:47 PM EDT
[#10]
Overrated as a writer, IMO.

Very true, but he was one hell of a writer.
And with a picture like this, you gotta like him somewhat.

[#12]
He got the sh*t beat out of him for calling a Hells Angel beating his gf a punk in the middle of a bunch of Hells Angels.

Don't care how much of a hippie he was i'd of bought him a drink.

Yep. Entertaining writer as well, for me anyway.

+1

Seen it 100 times.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

I'm not into drugs, but I can't help but love that quote.

Drugged out nutcase , liberal douche bag writing stream-of-conscious garbage. Occasionally he could turn an interesting phrase.

My question is, how could a drugged out loser own so many NFA weapons ?

And , what kind of scumbag shoots himself in his own home (kitchen) he shares with his family , thereby ensuring it is his family that finds him ? Would any of you HST fans do that to your own wife and son ?

He loved guns and gave the world some of the most intense drug induced writing to ever be written, whats not to like?

I was his neighbor for about 1 year in CO.

He was one crazy S.O.B. (RIP).

+1 to all of the above
he did do the best piece on muhammed ali, IMHO...

Crazy, raving lunatic, very entertaining. I don't agree with a lot of his views, but damn, what a character.

What really bothered me was that he shot himself on the phone with either his wife or his kid, I don't remember, but that's pretty shitty.

Habitual drug use and drunk driving and written advocacy of same. Reckless and criminal use of his beloved firearms and he ALWAYS supported gun control politicians to name a few.

He had dozens of arrests and would have had more if he wasn't protected by the corrupt Sheriff of Pitkin County, his friend.

The book is better.  Hells Angels is good, as is The Curse of Lono is funny. He peaked in the 70's.  Some very good writing at times.

"And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

didn't hemingway do something like that as well? great artistic types are always over the top and by normal standards often wicked, it doesn't make them any less interesting.

Fear and Loathing is a true classic.  Hunter S. Thompson was one hell of a dude, I just wish he didnt end it like that...

I put Thompson in the same boat with Hemingway...................

I could give a shit what either of them wrote ..............

I will not lay accolades on anyone that takes their own life........

I enjoy most of his writing, but I just read The Rum Diary, what a piece of shit that book is.

I don't agree with it, but I do understand. He was very sick and wanted control. It was a fitting death for him based on his personal and political views.

I would have loved to spend a day with him, he seemed to be quite the character. I enjoy his style of writing, but I could see how many people would not.
Many people here have used the term liberal to describe him. I think libertarian would be a better fit.

Didn't see it before I posted. I don't think there's a better description for a Grade A worthless douchebag than one who decides to quit living.

Legend.

Heard him speak at the U of MD.
Funny and very entertaining.

He epitomizes the notion that it is better to burn out than to fade away.

The good doctor was a creative hero of mine. I understand some of the negative attitudes towards him here. But he was a great man. A strange man, but a great one. And a patriot of a different breed.

He is missed.

I don't quite get the indignation and offense at him killing himself.

He led a long enough and certainly extraordinary life, did a lot of new things and was loved and respected by a lot of people.

If he chose to end his life the way he lived it - on his own terms - I don't see a reason to be upset.

That kind of absolute individualism is quite a specimen of freedom, and he was a truly free man who went out exercising his second amendment rights.
1/10/2008 11:09:03 PM EDT

Men like him are one of the things that makes America great.  I'm pretty sure the entire Bill Of Rights was written with him in mind.

But, we could sure use more like him.

Some folks think Jack Kerouac was talented, too.  Two of many strung-out turds.  At least Lennon could play the guitar.

People who get all upset about suicide usually are Religious and god fearing folks, mind set being it's not your life.

I have all of his books, very good writer and mirror of the times.

The book Generation of Swine is a good view of the 80's and my favorite of them all
1/11/2008 3:25:55 AM EDT
[#50]
He was a freak. He was also an absolute lover of freedom. Read his book "Better than Sex: On the Campaign Trail".
There were two presidents that he both respected and hated with everything in him: Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. To him, they were the Head Swine; purely political machines with no other purpose than to grab power for themselves.

"You can turn your back on a person, but you can never turn your back on a drug. Particularly when it's waving a razor sharp hunting knife in your face.."
