What's a good price for a used one? I found one that seems to be in pretty good shape. It has a 20" bar. He's asking $180. I'm going to try and see if he'll take $150. Good deal or keep looking?

$150 is good if it runs and sounds right.
Good saw, I have a 55 and 3 other Husky's.

I have a model 55. Servered me wwell over the years.

Pull the muffler before you buy it. If you see any scaring on the piston or cylinder walls, do not buy it. Upper end kit will run 250.00-300.00 plus labor.

It's a 55 Rancher if that makes a difference.

Careful...some are the cheap(er) ones they sell at Lowe's...

$150 is a good price if it's a power-equipment dealer version though.

While a professed Stihlhead, I have a 372xp, and it's pretty badass

Severed or served?Severed is not a good word for a chainsaw thread.

I have one of each. Stihl and Husky's are both good saws.

I worked on many of them over the years and found them to be excellent home owner saws. The 55 has been produced for many years now and comes in a few different variations. There is a 55, 55 epa, 55 rancher, 455, etc etc.

Like stated above pull off the muffler (3 screws) and look at the piston and cylinder walls. If they are pitted or scratched pass on the deal. If they are not you should be gtg. Also make sure it starts and revs up smoothly. If it does not accelerate through the rpm's smoothly then it probably requires a tuneup. Most of the stuff you can do yourself (spark plug, fuel filter, etc) but a carb kit and carb adjustment I would leave to a professional.

Good luck!

That Lowe's rumor is crap, the saws Lowe's sells are exactly the same as sold at the dealers. The price is also the same model for model, Lowe's has no service facility so you should buy at the dealer.

I rebuilt a 357 xp. The piston was less then $100 and I cleaned up the cylinder wall with a little  myric acid. Not to say that it can't be costly, but it wouldnt be a deal breaker if the saw was cheap enough.

No,don't.

A well used half worn out 55 with the chain on backwards and no gas in it is twice the saw a 455 is.

Ok thats a slight(very) exageration.

I like my Husqvarna built saws.

How old is a Husky 55 anyway.  The Husqvarna 455 rancher runs around $400.00 new.
