The wife and I are just watching a special on Meth which started a minor argument. I guess I’m on the soft side of the fence on this one. Let’s see what you all think.

Here goes:

Let’s say a guy who has never gotten in trouble for drugs gets a recipe on how to cook meth.  He is a normal guy with no record. A regular good boy with no issues.  Let’s say he goes to Wal-Mart and purchases all the stuff needed to cook up his meth.  He takes that stuff home to his trailer (in the middle of the woods-no one is around).  He is cooking his meth and getting high. About hour 48 he is cooking a fresh batch and the whole place blows up! He is left blind and paralyzed from the explosion. His life as he knew it is gone forever.  NO other human being is harmed from the explosion OR his use of meth.

Now…the question:

If you are a judge/DA/county- Do you press charges/put him in jail?

Hypothetical answer - yes

this is a question best left to the prosecutor who went after the guy for porking the dead deer carcass, I would think.

Preferably just feed him to hungry bears (or something similar to avoid prolonged health care costs), but yes, at the very least, jail.

Hell to the yes, and I'd make a documentary about it to show lowlifes what happens when you fuck with that shit. Here in AR meth is a huge problem and it's one of the most destructive drugs I've seen.

If you've ever dealt with meth/ice heads you know what I'm talking about.

No provided he pay all his medical bills so the state doesn't have to.

If he doesn't/can't pay then he goes to prision since his illegal act is in fact harming others by forcing the tax payers to treat him.

Normally, I would hypothetically answer "yes".

But, if he is blind and paralyzed, I don't see what putting him in prison would do other than creating a big problem for the jailers.

I changed my mind.  He should go to jail.  He could be the go-to guy for the lazy man-rapists when they need a release and don't want to go through the whole "fight in the shower" thing.

Kill him and use any money he may have had to clean up the toxic waste mess he made.  Meth cooking leaves lots of really bad chemicals that most cooks just dump on the ground.
Fuck him in his drug making ass. (Hypothetically)

Naww... hers is what would REALLY happen.
An ambulance chaser lawyer would on cosignment, sue WalMart for 40 bizillion dollars for selling him the stuff to make the meth. The lawyer would also get him off of any legal charges. Because he was a victim of something that happend in his childhood that caused him to want to do meth in the first place. Then go to a court orderd goverment sponsored drug re-hab to dry him out, but allow him to get goverment sponsored medical marijuana to ease the nausia from the painkillers he has to take because of his accident. Then after he blows all of his money on self indulgence and hookers he will start drawing social security benefits because he can no longer work.

Hell, yes.   You think he was going to just use it all himself?  More like a little for himself and a lot to sell.

He could be first base in the prison softball league!

I agree here.

I'd say YES without reservation, but whats the point now?

I'd legalize coke.  People could speed all they wanted without cooking up lantern fuel.

if a meth lab blows up in the woods and no one is around to hear did it make a noise?

If would lay out in the woods and die, leaving the rest of us alone and not forcing the state and federal government to pay hundreds of thousands in lifetime medical bills, disability and welfare then I am all for letting him go.

If he forced the rest of us to pay for his stupidity, then fuck him.  Let him go to prison and enjoy having sex with his fellow inmates and suffering he deserves.

Pretty well sums it up for me.

You're free to do whatever you want with your life UNTIL it affects mine.

yep, his dumb ass will be a burden on the taxpayers and society as a whole. besides, the chemistry involved in meth labs creates a lot of toxic crap. Even if there was a fire there is a good chance a hazmat team will have to clean the crap up.

I love hypos..............nah, i'd sentence him to 1,000+ hours community service and have him appear weekly at local schools to show the young ones the bad side of life in the fast lane.

I like the less traditional approaches to punishment.  Alternative sentences are sometimes the way to go, and if I were the judge I'd try my best to make something good out of the situation.

Sending him to jail isn't going to do anyone any good, as he wouldn't go to prison anyway.  He'd be in a locked-down hospital for his term of incarceration.

I would sentence him to 3 years, all 3 years suspended if he meets the following conditions:

Once a week he goes to a different high school as a public speaker against Meth and to physically show the dangers of such for all 3 years.

He learns brail and once a week spends no less than 3 hours reading to sick children, like at the Ronald McDonald house or similiar, again for all 3 years.

He submit to random drug testing.

He works through the prison system just like "regular" prisoners, and pays the state for his medical costs.

If he follows all that for all 3 years with nary a hiccup, and combined with the knowledge he's already ruined his life, I'd call it time served and case set aside.

Tax payers will end up taking care of him, in or out of prison. I vote prison on the grounds that he is a man so foolish that he needs to be segregated from society.

OK then. Third base. Geeze, ya don't have to be so tough on a guy.

Fuck no, he didn't hurt anybody else.  And now the state is going to have to pay for his medical.

I think his time should be served doing community service.  You could put a life preserver on him and throw him in the middle of a pool.  He could serve as a floatation device for underprivileged children learning to swim.
