Wife and I worked in Chicago for over 40 years; her at Michigan Ave. and Chicago Ave. by the Water Tower, me at the top of the Magnificent Mile at Michigan Ave. and Walton in the Playboy Building. My 18th floor office and balcony overlooked Oak Street Beach and Lake Michigan. We lived in Lincoln Park for about ten years. It's the coolest place to live. Later we moved to Wrigleyville, and when we had kids we moved further north along the lake to Evanston because the Chicago Public School system is actually the shame of the nation. We miss driving to work down Lake Shore Drive every day. We miss the beach, all the architecture, the museums, the constant events and festivals and concerts, the thousands of restaurants, the night life, and the Cubs games at Wrigley Field. Crime used to be localized and kept within the housing project neighborhoods. Around 2005, the gangs broke out and created violent flash mobs all over the place, even on the ritzy Magnificent Mile. Crime is now everywhere. Cook County government corruption used to be entertaining and amusing back in the 1980s Blues Brothers era, but when you're in your prime earning years and raising a family, it has a negative impact on you. When we retired three years ago, we realized we couldn't afford to pay $2000/month just for property taxes. Plus, the State and City politics, rising crime, and Pritzker's assault weapons ban were the final straw. We moved two miles north of the Wisconsin border and have a house and property that's twice as big and 110 years newer. And we can afford $700/month for property taxes. We're happy cheeseheads now. I actually like cities. Although I've only had 2 very brief visits to Chicago, I get it. There's good food, interesting architecture, and decent scenery in some places. The first time I went was long enough ago to see the RTH and Cabrini Green. It was shocking to me the way the looked in-person relative to what I'd seen on TV/movies. Apparently they weren't in use anymore, but they hadn't been torn down yet. |

All the “Chicago is a fucking shithole, go to get murdered” people haven’t been there or they’re so socially inept that they’d hate any place you sent em. Took the kids to the Museum of Science and Industry a few years ago, did some other things, went to Navy Pier, ate awesome pizza, had a great time. It’s got its bad areas. That’s every city. |

I'm not much for cities and seldom go to one of any size but if I had to live in or nearer one Chicago would be on my short list. |

Downtown is pretty cool, good for tourists, lots to see and do. You start getting into the neighborhoods and things can get sketchy, still plenty to do, not much to see. You can find some pretty good dining in the neighborhoods, but you do have to keep your head on a swivel. Born and raised, but not there anymore, still go through at times, son lives in Gage park. |

I used to really enjoy visiting Chicago for an occasional weekend trip, before COVID. I don't know if it has gotten back to a similar state as it was before March of 2020, but I sincerely doubt it. |
