This is just a fun truck....yeah it could accelerate a bit quicker and it's transmission does seem a little odd but the damn thing is fun

I hadn't had a truck since 2016 when I traded in my 99 Frontier so it's great having a truck again

17 tacoma here. Manual though so i haven’t had to deal with the weird transmission issues. Sadly it’s not big enough for kids so I’ll only be able to keep it a couple more years.

As long as you enjoy it and don’t bring it into the dealer complaining that “you have to do something! I’m going to leave a bad review if you don’t fix it right now!” every week for the transmission.

I really miss mine. I have a Tundra now and it's definitely more roomy. But I still miss this truck.

You guys probably know better than me, does Toyota produce a truck with locking differential(s)??

Maybe in their off road versions??

The Tacoma and 4Runner are available with a locking rear differential. The current Tundra doesn't have that option.

I rode in a 2020 Tacoma the other day.

It’s TINY. And underpowered.  And had a lifetime average of ~16mpg.

W. T. F. ??

There is a little place at the end of the neighborhood that does dollar taco Tuesdays.  I'm loving it, feef the fam for like $15.  I've learned to skip the orange sauce though or my sphincter will be hurting for a couple of days.

I won't get into how I feel about the transmission/motor combo in mine. One poster here said it best. They endlessly bicker like an old married couple.
I test drove mine on very flat terrain a few times before buying. Then I took it to actual hills, mountains and long grades 2 months later for the first time and realized what a mess it is.

But.....I have to say this.
It's a fun little capable mountain goat. Not a rocket ship or a gas sipper. I knew that going in and I'm good with that. It's got a nice sort of "retro" truck feel to it I don't get from my other full sized trucks. But still I can go across the country in it comfortably. I like that about it. The "truck feel" that is a throwback to my younger days bouncing around dirt roads in very simple yet rugged trucks.
I like my 2020 OR DCLB.....I sure don't love it.
But I've decided to keep it as a dedicated camping truck and have added a cap and sleeping platform. Also a home made awning that goes off the one side. It has its purpose.

And it fits in the garage, where it pretty much sits until I have time for a quick adventure, camping trip or paddling trip with the canoe on top or pulled fun of dry bags on a very small trailer. It should last me a very long time.

More of an egg roll than a taco if you ask me.

They should.
Even my 14 year old Jeep has electronic limited slip differentials , front and rear.
And they do lock up , it's uncanny .

That Toyota better be a 4X4 Beamy !!!

I liked my '17, mostly because it rode awesome on and off road.

Needed something to tow with though so sold it.

I thoroughly enjoy my 2020 Tacoma. Bought in October and already at 21,000 miles.

How does it lock up when it's sitting at the dealer waiting to get it's 4th TIPM module?

Apparently.   That’s a semi-truck, semi-trailer, or tractor-trailer.

When I'm having fun with ours I don't even notice the shifting issues. And it's a decent small hauler.

I traded my 2018 Tacoma TRD Offroad for a new Tundra last year because I grew to hate the miserable erratic shifting experience and dirtbike powerband with diesel gearing. Its a mismatched gearing clusterfuck.

Moving up to a Tundra was the best solution... and made me realize I should have just gotten a Tundra 2 years earlier and saved myself the frustration.

I really wanted to like and keep the Taco but just couldnt stand driving it anymore.
